Obama says his health care law mostly in place

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama argues that his signature health care law is already benefiting most Americans even if they don't know it.

The president says despite what he calls "sky is falling" predictions, the Affordable Care Act's provisions are already in place for those with health insurance.

He says what's left is to help those Americans who don't have health care coverage to obtain it. He acknowledged that is "a big undertaking" and predicted there could still be some glitches as the details are worked out.

Obama was speaking at a news conference Tuesday at the White House.

A Playbook for Undoing the Sequester

Who would have guessed that the air-traffic controllers and meat inspectors would be the first ones lucky enough to avoid the across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration?

So it went on Friday, when Congress passed legislation to give the Federal Aviation Administration special flexibility in implementing its sequester cuts. The bill exempted air-traffic controllers from furloughs, which had caused flight delays at major airport hubs throughout the Northeast for the past five days. Meat inspectors also received a carve-out in late March following a powerful lobbying push and under the guise of ensuring food safety.

Now, with two sequester tweaks on the books, other special-interest groups, unions, and lobbyists are planning to rev up their efforts to undo the cuts bit by bit or, in this case, by a few billion dollars here or there. The actions of the FAA over the past week, alongside airline groups and unions, offer a playbook for others to use as they too seek exemptions.

?What you?re seeing now is an unraveling of the sequester. This is predictable as the sun rising in the east, and it will happen piece by piece over the next 60 to 90 days,? says Steve Bell, senior director of economic policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center and a former staff director for the Senate Budget Committee.

Already, interest groups are plotting new ways to cast their particular sequester cuts as dire or unfair or safety hazards since they see an opening to escape the full force of the legislation. Remember the hollering a few weeks ago about cancer patients being turned away from treatment or clinical trials? Well, the American Cancer Society Action Network plans to ramp up its pressure on lawmakers following the FAA legislation. The group has an energized grassroots organization; a lobbying team in Washington; and lots of face time with lawmakers. After all, if air-traffic controllers can get a pass, then the cancer advocacy group thinks patients should too.

?We?re no longer just talking about why we need this additional funding. We?re talking about people who are dying because of what politicians are unable to do,? says Christopher Hansen, president of the American Cancer Society Action Network, the advocacy arm of the American Cancer Society. The message, he adds, ?is going to get more edgy.?

It took a mere six days for the FAA to push Congress to change its language on the agency?s sequester cuts. The furloughs of air-traffic controllers began April 21. Each ensuing day, the agency released a press release and tweeted about the number of flights delayed due to sequestration and the resulting reduced staffing at airports.

On Wednesday alone, 863 flights were delayed at major hubs in New York, Washington, Cleveland, Dallas, and Jacksonville, Fla. On average, New Yorkers? flights were delayed by one hour, while delays at the Los Angeles airport spanned into two hours, says Mark Duell, vice president of operations at FlightAware.com, an industry tracking group. The airlines also threatened to undo their rule to not keep passengers waiting on the tarmac for more than three hours.

Forget that an additional 2,132 flights were delayed on Wednesday, due to weather or other typical airline mishaps. This week, for instance, New York suffered from high winds, and Florida experienced thunderstorms, Duell says.

When the flights were delayed, the message from the airlines was clear: This is all the fault of the sequester. Pilots and flight attendants in their announcements attributed problems to the government cuts, says airline industry analysts. This riled up consumers and made them aware of the sequester cuts in a way they may not have experienced them before. (In mid-March, a majority of Americans had yet to see evidence of the sequester in their lives, says Gallup pollsters).

Then came the lobbying muscle to fight the FAA cuts. That?s the thing about the airline industry?it has lots of manpower. The airline pilots have a union, as do the air-traffic controllers. Major airlines have an industry group alongside the regional airlines. Even companies involved in shipping, transportation, air express, and postal delivery got involved.

It was all-out blitz, from the cable-news shots of angry passengers delayed at major airports and missing connecting flights to websites set up by the industry to decry the issue. ?Don?t Ground America? was the slogan of one industry advocacy site. ?The FAA?s unnecessary and reckless action will disrupt air travel for millions of Americans, cost jobs, and threatens to ground the U.S. economy to halt,? says the site.

This combination of angry consumers and a powerful industry?combined with a lack of opposition?forced Congress to vote to give the FAA more room to maneuver with its sequester cuts. In the weeks to come, the question is: Will this prove as a successful template for other industries or a one-off lucky break for the FAA on the sequester?

The Internal Revenue Service recently announced its plans to furlough its employees. The group representing them, the National Treasury Employees Union, wants those furloughs scaled back. ?Congress just voted to make it more likely that their flights home for another vacation today will not be delayed, but they should be staying here to find a way to stop the sequester and prevent the loss of services the American people rely on,? said NTEU President Colleen Kelley in a statement.?

In the coming weeks, the cuts least likely to receive much attention are those that affect the poor or the unemployed. Already, workers who?ve been out of job for six months or more have seen ?federal unemployment checks cut by about 11 percent cuts due to the sequester.

?It pains and saddens me that there is no outcry to undo the sequester cuts for them,? says Judy Conti, a federal advocacy coordinator with the National Employment Law Project. ?The political reality is that members of the House are not willing to do that.?

Chrysler revenue slumps on new model launches

By Bernie Woodall and Jennifer Clark

DETROIT/MILAN (Reuters) - Carmaker Fiat's first-quarter profit slumped more than expected as its U.S. unit Chrysler's sales suffered from the phase-out of the Jeep Liberty pending a new model launch.

"We knew we would be limping in the quarter. I just didn't think I was going to limp that much," said Sergio Marchionne, chief executive of both Chrysler and its parent Fiat, on a conference call with analysts and reporters.

Marchionne in January warned that Chrysler's first-quarter earnings would be down from a year earlier because of the expense of product launches and the fact that the Jeep Liberty SUV was no longer being produced.

The Liberty's successor, the Jeep Cherokee, was not sold in the first quarter and will not be sold until the third quarter.

But Marchionne said that there were delays in the production launches of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and RAM heavy duty trucks, which he said are among the highest profit-makers.

Fiat, which took control of the third-largest U.S. automaker when Chrysler emerged from a government-sponsored bankruptcy four years ago, stood by its financial forecasts for 2013 despite a worsening European car market and lower revenue in the U.S. for the first quarter.

Fiat sees full-year revenue in the 88 billion euro to 92 billion euro range, trading profit between 4 billion and 4.5 billion euros, and net industrial debt of about 7 billion euros.

Analysts had expected a weak quarter for the combined group, and the results came in below consensus.

Trading profit was 618 million euros, below the 720 million euros forecast by 21 analysts published on Fiat's website. Pre-tax profit came in at 160 million euros, compared to a forecast of 300 million euros by analysts.

At Chrysler, first-quarter net income fell 65 percent to $166 million from $473 million a year earlier. Net revenue slipped 6 percent to $15.4 billion.

Net debt was 7.10 billion euros, in line with forecasts, and higher than the 6.5 billion euros at the end of 2012.

Citi Research analyst Harald Hendrikse said the quarter's results again highlight Fiat's difficult debt issue.

"With debt at current levels, the company cannot compete in this industry longer term against giants like Volkswagen AG spending 16 billion euros on capital expenditures and research and development," said Citi in a note.

NARROWING EUROPEAN LOSSES

Fiat's European losses before interest and tax narrowed to 111 million euros, from a year-ago loss of 170 million euros, despite a 10 percent drop in industry sales in the region. Marchionne said he expects Fiat to narrow its operating losses in Europe further in 2013.

Fiat outperformed a dismal European car market with the launch of the new Fiat 500L small car, the company said.

Fiat, like competitors Ford , General Motors and Peugeot , is losing money in Europe as buyers delay purchases of new cars until the economy improves. Unlike rivals, however, Fiat has decided to invest in retooling its idled factories to ramp up volumes of higher-margin cars for export rather than close plants.

The company aims to break even in Europe by 2015 or 2016.

LOOKING AHEAD

Chrysler said it will increase vehicle shipments in the second quarter by at least 13 percent from the first quarter, to 650,000 vehicles up from 574,000 in the first quarter.

Marchionne said the Jeep Grand Cherokee, now that its launch delays are over, will show strong April sales, and that the biggest boost in Grand Cherokee sales will show in the third quarter.

Marchionne said in the coming quarters Chrysler will better match up production and retail sales performance.

"Close your eyes, plug your nose and move it on from here," said Marchionne to analysts on a conference call.

COMING TO AMERICA?

Looking further out into the future, Marchionne said he hopes to merge Fiat and Chrysler into one group and he hinted strongly that the combined company will be headquartered outside of its native Italy.

Many observers expect the merged company to be headquartered where Chrysler is now, in Auburn Hills near Detroit, and to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange and in Italy.

Marchionne said the merged company would be headquartered in the geographical region that has "the adequacy of capital markets (necessary to) support our operations going forward."

Marchionne said that "Europe is becoming a less and less relevant fact in the scheme of things" as its share of the global auto market diminishes.

Italy has been a particularly weak player in a weakening region for auto sales.

"Italy in 2012 represented 10 percent of the overall sales of this (Fiat) Group," aid Marchionne. "And I think it's a stark reality for someone who has been a Fiat aficionado all his life. This is a different house. It looks at the world in a completely different way."

1st female Iraq war resister to be court-martialed

FORT CARSON, Colo. (AP) ? A court-martial got underway Monday for the first female U.S. Army soldier to flee to Canada to avoid a second tour of duty in the Iraq war.

Army Pfc. Kimberly Rivera is charged with desertion and could face up to five years in prison and a dishonorable discharge if convicted, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported (http://bit.ly/12wpci6 ).

Rivera, 30, was a wheeled-vehicle driver in Fort Carson's 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and served in Iraq in 2006. She has said that, while there, she became disillusioned with the U.S. mission in Iraq.

During a two-week leave in the U.S. in 2007, Rivera crossed the Canadian border after she was ordered to serve another tour in Iraq. She applied for refugee status but was denied.

Rivera then applied for permanent residency, but Canadian immigration officials rejected that application, too. Authorities also rejected her requests to stay on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.

Rivera was first ordered to leave Canada or face deportation in 2009, but she appealed that decision. The mother of four faced another deportation order issued in 2012.

She was arrested at the U.S. border and taken into military custody.

Roughly 19,000 people signed an online petition in Canada protesting Rivera's deportation order, and rallies were held in a number of Canadian cities calling on the government to let her stay in the country.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the U.S. veterans organization Veterans for Peace also protested the deportation order.

In 2012, the War Resisters Support Campaign, a Canadian activist group, estimated there were about 200 Iraq war resisters in Canada. It said two other Iraq war resisters who were deported, Robin Long and Clifford Cornell, faced lengthy jail sentences upon their return.

Long was given a dishonorable discharge in 2008 and sentenced to 15 months in a military prison after pleading guilty to charges of desertion.

The lower house of Canada's Parliament passed a motion in 2009 in favor of allowing U.S. military deserters to stay, but the Conservative Party government was not persuaded.

During the Vietnam War, as many as 90,000 Americans won refuge in Canada, most of them to avoid the military draft. Many were given permanent residence status that led to Canadian citizenship, but the majority went home after President Jimmy Carter granted amnesty in the late 1970s.

Many Canadian politicians say the situation is different now because Iraq war deserters like Rivera enlisted in the U.S. military voluntarily.

Lolcat Federation

The Lolcat Federation is an empire with a simple purpose in mind. A nation of space-faring Lolcat's that can be taken seriously in a sci-fi environment.

The Federation
The Lolcat Federation extends to fifty eight individual colonised planets in different stages of Terraforming. Overall, the Lolcat Federation has been capable of space travel for over four hundred years. They are an industrious and militaristic nation with strong cultural backgrounds.

Government Structure
The Lolcat Federation has a tiered government structure that works its way from the bottom up. In the second month of the year votes are held to determine the City Council. In the fourth month of the year voting occurs again to select a State Council, if applicable. In the sixth month voting continues to determine the National Council. At ten months people vote for the Planetary Council, and at twelve months the leaders of all planets come together to choose the supreme council.

Each council consists of three representatives, one for each caste of the Lolcat Federation society (see society and culture).

City Council
The City Council deals with important details of day to day city life and ongoing issues throughout the year. They determine what gets developed or redeveloped, where city funding goes, maintains the outlying areas of the city and encourages cultural celebrations.

State Council
The State Council deals with inter-city matters, such as roads, goods and development or protection of large natural resources.

National Council
Often making the State Council unnecessary, the National Council oversee matters that effect the entire country including trade with other countries of goods, major laws and determining where the funding of the entire country is invested.

Planetary Council
The Planetary Council oversees the distribution of national resources, including imports from other planets. They are the ones responsible for the reactions to major disasters and for global policies eg. setting standards to prevent global warming.

Supreme Council
The Supreme Council deal with matters with other nations and the future direction for the Lolcat Federation. It is they who determine what planets are to be colonised and how to interact with other life.

Society and Culture
Lolcat's have a caste society determined from birth not by their status or wealth, but their genetics not all that dissimilar to bees. As a result, three defined castes define their role in life.

Leader Caste
Often attributed to their height, the Leader Caste are the most intelligent and the most physically developed in terms of hands. However only about one in twelve cats are born into the Leader Caste. These are the people who run the world, usually the politicians, generals or business owners. However they are notoriously also the first to refute an idea already established, often prideful and starkly contrasting the rest of their culture. The best of the Leader Caste are destined for greatness.

Worker Caste
While shorter and having paws instead of hands, the Worker Caste are the backbone of the Lolcat Federation. Two out of three Lolcats are born into the Worker Caste where they will be ensured a life of labour, either in the many industries or by joining the military. Usually humble and fun loving, the Worker Caste are definitely what keeps the Federation running. They are usually the most scruffy and wild looking.

Merchant Caste
The smallest of Lolcats are a part of the Merchant Caste, best at minding things for others or for themselves. It is often thought that due to their size they stake a large amount of personal investment in their reputation but remain humble about their work. These folk are often the interim between the Leader Caster and Worker Caster, and the most likely to end up fat with plenty of creature comforts.

Culture
The Lolcat Federation are rich in culture, with several public holidays to celebrate different facets of life (most notably

Oil falls to nearly $93 ahead of US growth data

BANGKOK (AP) ? The price of oil fell to near $93 a barrel Friday ahead of quarterly growth figures from the world's biggest economy.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was down 62 cents to $93.02 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $2.21 to close at $93.64 on Thursday after the U.S. Labor Department said the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell last week by 16,000, suggesting that layoffs have declined.

Traders turned slightly cautious ahead of first quarter U.S. economic growth due later Friday. Economists expect to see a significant improvement from the anemic 0.4 percent growth rate reported for the October-December quarter.

But analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said the result "is unlikely to allay market concerns after a recent run of disappointing data indicates some decline in growth momentum." Recent reports have suggested that manufacturing is starting to weaken. Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes dipped in March.

Brent crude, which is used to price oil used by many U.S. refiners, fell 50 cents to $102.91 a barrel on the ICE futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Gasoline fell 0.1 cent to $2.801 per gallon.

? Heating oil fell 1.5 cents to $2.872 a gallon.

? Natural gas lost 1.5 cents to $4.152 per 1,000 cubic feet.

My taxes are done, now what? | MNN - Mother Nature Network

The April 15 tax deadline has come and gone, but that doesn?t mean you don?t have to think about your finances until next year. Now is the time for a little spring cleaning ? of your personal finances that is. The steps you take now will not only help you improve your future financial situation, they will also better prepare you for filing next year?s tax return.

?

Review your most recent return

I know, the last thing you want to do is revisit the tax return you just filed, but now is the best time to review your return, while the information is still fresh. Did you have tax due or did you receive a large refund? If so, consider changing your withholding. Did you lose important receipts and miss out on charitable donation deductions and other credits? If so, put a plan in place now to save receipts. Personally, I scan receipts so that I have a digital copy as a backup to the original.

?

Retirement savings

Experts recommend that you check your retirement savings account annually; since you have to file a tax return annually, tacking this spring cleaning step onto your schedule just makes sense. Make sure you?re saving enough to meet your retirement needs, rebalance your account and don?t forget to sit down with an investment professional to get a big-picture look at your financial future.

?

Short-term savings plans

Don?t just set up a savings plan for retirement; you also need to look at any near-term financial goals. Do you need to boost your cash emergency fund? If so, write out a plan that details how you will meet this goal. Is a family vacation in the works for next year? Start a savings plan now so that you can cash flow your trip.

?

Check your credit report

Did you know that 42 million Americans have errors on their credit report? Errors can lower your credit score and in turn, increase the interest rate you pay on your mortgage, auto insurance and other financial products. Get into the habit of checking your credit report annually. You can order a free report from each of the three major credit bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com

?

Make a plan to pay down debt

Are you still paying on student loans even though you graduated a decade ago? Is your credit card debt load stagnant? If so, you may just need to have a written plan to make a dent in your debt. Simply write down each of your credit account balances, including auto loans, credit cards and student loans, and then put them in the order you want to pay them off. Some folks prefer highest interest rate to lowest interest rate and others want to start with the smallest debt first. I don?t care how you order them, just put them in order and write out how you plan to pay them off as soon as possible. This means making more than the minimum payment, so you may need to look elsewhere in your budget for an extra $20 or $100 a month to expedite the process.

Boston victims face huge bills; donations pour in

Cost of amputating a leg? At least $20,000. Cost of an artificial leg? More than $50,000 for the most high-tech models. Cost of an amputee's rehab? Often tens of thousands of dollars more.

These are just a fraction of the medical expenses victims of the Boston Marathon bombing will face.

The mammoth price tag is probably not what patients are focusing on as they begin the long healing process. But friends and strangers are already setting up fundraisers and online crowd-funding sites, and a huge Boston city fund has already collected more than $23 million in individual and corporate donations.

No one knows yet if those donations ? plus health insurance, hospital charity funds and other sources ? will be enough to cover the bills. Few will even hazard a guess as to what the total medical bill will be for a tragedy that killed three people and wounded more than 260. At least 15 people lost limbs, and other wounds include head injuries and tissue torn apart by shrapnel.

Health insurance, as practically anyone who has ever gotten hurt or sick knows, does not always cover all costs. In the case of artificial limbs, for example, some insurance companies pay for a basic model but not a computerized one with sophisticated, lifelike joints.

Rose Bissonnette, founder of the New England Amputee Association, said that the moment she heard about the bombings, she knew immediately that her organization's services would be needed. The advocacy group helps amputees navigate things such as insurance coverage for artificial limbs.

Bissonnette shared one group member's struggle to get coverage for artificial arms as an example of the red tape some bombing victims could face. The woman "got a call from the insurance company and the person on the other end said, 'How long are you going to need the prosthetic hands?'" Bissonnette recalled.

Bissonnette herself was in a horrific car crash 16 years ago that left her with injuries similar to those facing the Boston victims. Her mangled lower left leg had to be amputated and her right ankle was partially severed. Her five-month hospital stay cost more than $250,000. Health insurance covered all her treatment, rehab and her prosthesis.

Health economist Ted Miller noted that treating just one traumatic brain injury can cost millions of dollars, and at least one survivor has that kind of injury. He also pointed out that the medical costs will include treating anxiety and post-traumatic stress ? "an issue for a whole lot more people than just people who suffered physical injuries," he said.

Adding to the tragedy's toll will be lost wages for those unable to work, including two Massachusetts brothers who each lost a leg, Miller said. They had been roofers but may have to find a new line of work.

Many survivors will also need help with expenses beyond immediate health care, including things like modifying cars for those who lost limbs or remodeling homes to accommodate wheelchairs.

Many survivors live in Massachusetts, a state that requires residents to have health insurance, "which should cover most of their required treatment," said Amie Breton, spokeswoman for Massachusetts' consumer affairs office. "The total cost of that treatment is impossible to calculate at this early stage."

Amputees may face the steepest costs, and artificial legs are the costliest. They range from about $7,200 for a basic below-the-knee model to as much as $90,000 for a high-tech microprocessor-controlled full leg, said Dr. Terrence Sheehan, chief medical officer for Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital in Rockville, Md., and medical director of the Amputee Coalition, a national advocacy group.

Legs need to be replaced every few years, or more often for very active users or those who gain or lose weight. Limb sockets need to be replaced even more often and also cost thousands of dollars each, Sheehan said.

Massachusetts is among about 20 states that require health insurers to pay for prosthetic limbs, but many plans don't cover 100 percent of those costs, Sheehan said. "Most are skimpy beyond basic prosthetics and they have not caught up with current available technology," he said.

"The insurer will use terminology such as 'not medically necessary'" to deny computerized feet or knees that can often make the patient better able to function and more comfortable and safe, Sheehan said.

Some insurers may be willing to make exceptions for the Boston blast survivors.

"We will work to ensure that financial issues/hardship will not pose a barrier to the care that affected members' need," said Sharon Torgerson, spokeswoman for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts, one of the state's largest health insurers.

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, another big insurer, is changing its policy and will pay for some of the more expensive bionic limbs when there is a demonstrated need, said Dr. Michael Sherman, chief medical officer. He said that 15 blast survivors admitted to hospitals are Harvard Pilgrim customers and that the insurance company is discussing "whether we might absorb some of the copays and deductibles."

"This is a terrorist act, and our only thought here is about providing support," he said.

The 26 hospitals that have treated bombing victims have charity funds that will cover some of the costs, said Tim Gens, executive vice president of the Massachusetts Hospital Association. Some injured residents may be eligible for Massachusetts' public health funds for the uninsured or underinsured. People with huge medical bills they can't afford are eligible, regardless of income.

Gens said hospitals are still focused on treating survivors, not on costs.

"It's an extraordinary shock to so many individuals. The hospitals are working very hard to make sure that each family gets the support they need. Billing is not an issue they're addressing right now," Gens said.

At Massachusetts General Hospital, where 31 victims have gotten treatment, chief financial officer Sally Mason Boemer said bills "create a lot of stress. Our assumption is there will be sources we can tap through fundraising." Boemer added: "Now is not the time to add additional stress to patients."

Bombings survivor Heather Abbott said Thursday she has already gotten offers of help to pay for an artificial leg. The 38-year-old Newport, R.I., woman was waiting in line to get into a crowded bar when the bombs went off.

"I felt like my foot was on fire. I knew I couldn't stand up," she recalled from her hospital bed. Surgeons amputated her left leg below the knee.

A big chunk of charity money for survivors will come from One Fund Boston, established by Boston's mayor and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick.

The fund has gotten more than $20 million in donations. Determining who gets what is still being worked out, but victims' insurance status and place of residence won't be a factor, said Kenneth Feinberg, the fund administrator. He oversaw the 9/11 compensation fund during its first three years, distributing more than $7 billion to 5,300 families and victims.

Grass-roots fundraising efforts include online funds set up by friends and relatives of the victims.

Those victims include Roseann Sdoia, a Boston woman who was near the marathon finish line when the blasts occurred. Sdoia was hit by shrapnel, fire and a tree that became a projectile and injured her left leg, the funding site says. Her right leg had to be amputated above the knee. After several operations, Sdoia has started rehab.

"She is a fighter and her attitude is phenomenal," said her friend and former sorority sister, Christine Hart, who set up the site. More than $270,000 has been raised for Sdoia so far, money that may help pay for an artificial leg, transportation to and from rehab, and modifications to her car or home, Hart said.

The donations will help make sure "that finances are not part of the burden" she has to bear, Hart said.

Other funds have been set up in communities like Stoneham, a Boston suburb that counts at least five current or former residents among the victims. A Stoneham Strong fundraising event is set for Friday evening, with participants asked to circle the high school track to show support for the marathon victims. Hundreds are expected, said organizer Shelly MacNeill.

"The outpouring has been unbelievable," she said.

You may find their contact information in the phone book or online, but it's even better if they have trusted you with their numbers so they will not feel like you are spamming them.

If you want your customers to trust you, back up any claims with actual proof. You can talk a good game about your product, but sharing a video or photo that provides proof that you're selling a solution goes a long way. This illustrates why you need to sell any products you have used if possible.

One important suggestion for marketing on the Internet is to adjust the content, as well as content delivery, to have your customers be under the impression they have complete control. This is an effective marketing strategy. Make it clear from the beginning that participation is voluntary and you will be seen as much more credible.

Making and uploading a viral video and including tags in your video will aid in your internet marketing success. Make sure to link to your site in the video description. This can help boost the number of visitors on your site regularly.

You should include a chat section for customers on your social media website. This will make people feel like they are part of a group, not just a customer. People enjoy being part of groups and clubs so treating them as if they are part of a select group will keep them coming back to your site.

If you issue a news release, it might drum up some internet business. If you have the ability to write press releases which are crisp and have clarity, there are numerous online sources available which will publish and release the material to markets in your niche. You can boost your presence in this way.

Even if you plan to outsource your email marketing, you should know the basic methods behind Internet promotion. You should be able to master the necessary tools in no time. This type of experience will be extremely useful for you throughout the entire life cycle of your products and services.

It is essential that you find the right places to advertise your business online. You can't sell baseball cards to someone that wants to buy old Star Wars toys. People will look for what they need in areas that offer exactly what it is that they are looking for. So, in short, be thoughtful of the places that people interested in your business would be looking online before choosing where to advertise.

Try using words like "simple" and 'easy" in your marketing strategy. People are hesitant to order from sites if the process is too complicated. It is a beneficial way to boost business.

Lure new customers to visit your site by offering them an incentive, such as a free product or service. This makes for savvy Affiliate marketing, because your free product acts as a persuasive advertisement for the materials you're actually trying to sell. You can use your ad campaign to detail your customers about the contest.

Here is a tip for website marketing! Customers should never have to hunt to find what you're selling. This is where you sell the product. The customer should know right away what you're selling on your landing page. If they have to look around on your site for the information they want, they will likely leave more quickly.

Your eyes should be open as to how you can market your business through the internet. There are many different ways you can approach this. You can also learn a lot about how to make this work for your business. By using this advice, you will be successful at Online marketing in no time.

Circles for iPhone and iPad review: A beautiful memory game

Circles for iPhone and iPad review: A beautiful memory game

Circles for iPhone and iPad is a gorgeous memory game, similar to Simon, that tests your ability to repeat a sequence of lighted circles. You can play alone or challenge your friends to a battle to see who out-memorizes who.

The premise is simple: you are presented with up to six circles, each a different color and with a different sound. For your first turn, a sequence of two lights will light up and it's your job to repeat that sequence. For each turn, an additional light is added to the sequence. You simply continue playing until you make a mistake.

That's the basic idea, and fun even as is, but Circles takes it a step further with multiplier gameplay and weapons! There are three different weapons you can use against your opponents: Lightning, which speeds up the playback, Twirl, which will rotate the circles after playback, and Blackout, which removes sound and color from the circles.

As you play the game, whether it's alone or against an opponent (except Practice mode), you earn coins that can be used to purchase weapons and chances. You can also buy coins with real money as in-app purchases.

The good

  • Beautiful design
  • Soothing sounds
  • Adds a new twist to the classic Simon memory game with Lightning, Twirl, and Blackout
  • Gives encouraging words when you pass a level
  • Multiplayer through Game Center
  • Earn coins to buy weapons and chances
  • iCloud support

The bad

  • No complaints

The bottom line

Circles is a fantastic little game. It's challenging and good for your brain. I love that you can play against your friends and attack them with weapons to make it more challenging to win. I have a terrible memory and tend to be fairly horrible at these types of games, yet I still enjoy Circles? I'll just keep it to myself what my max number of taps is? what's yours?!

Bell Tower and Cherryland Humane Society among issues ...

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY -- Multiple issues were discussed and voted on at tonight's Grand Traverse County meeting.

With a unanimous vote the board of commissioners approved a contract between the county and Cherryland Humane Society. The contract allows the humane society to impound animals that used to be housed at the animal shelter. Now the shelter will be shut down and animals will become the responsibility of the humane society.

Also in tonight's agenda was the public hearing on the historic courthouse bell tower. The motion to establish a trust fund for the historical restoration of the chimes passed with all in favor. Budget restraints and safety issues forced officials to disable the cables and weights used to produce the clock chimes back in 2008. Restoring the clock will be expensive due to it's age, since the parts will need to be handmade.

Multiple people spoke on behalf of restoring the chimes, and discussion was even started about public donations and matched public funding. Carol Hale, who lives about a block from the courthouse, stated, "Not everybody had a watch! Kids got up at seven because they heard seven rings, and they knew school started at eight. The merchants downtown at 5 o-clock - you could hear the keys in the locks closing up for the night - it was time to go home for dinner. It's really a community time piece." There are issues with the clock itself, such as replacing the hands and timing mechanisms, and the board decided to address those at a later date.

Liverpool's Suarez gets 10-game ban for biting

By Martyn Herman

LONDON (Reuters) - Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was handed a 10-match suspension by the Football Association (FA) on Wednesday following his bite on Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic at the weekend.

Suarez accepted a charge of violent conduct after the incident in the 2-2 Premier League draw at Anfield on Sunday but disputed the FA view that it merited more than a three-game ban.

An Independent Regulatory Commission met in London on Wednesday to decide the Uruguayan international's fate and added seven games to the usual ban for violent conduct.

The suspension begins immediately, meaning Liverpool's leading scorer will miss his side's last four games of the season and the first six at the beginning of next term.

Liverpool, who expressed their shock at the Commission's decision, have until Friday (1100 GMT) to appeal.

"Both the club and player are shocked and disappointed at the severity of today's Independent Regulatory Commission decision," Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre said in a statement on the club's website (www.liverpoolfc.com).

"We await the written reasons tomorrow (Thursday) before making any further comment."

Suarez's bite on Ivanovic's arm at Anfield was missed by referee Kevin Friend but television replays showed him sinking his teeth into the Serbian.

WIDELY CONDEMNED

The 26-year-old Suarez, who was banned for biting an opponent while with Dutch club Ajax before joining Liverpool in 2011, apologized after the game and was fined a reported 200,000 pounds ($305,700) by the club.

However, he was widely condemned for his behavior with some reports suggesting he was in danger of being sacked by the club, although Liverpool said this week that they wanted the Uruguayan to see out his four-year contract.

The FA said a three-match ban was "clearly insufficient" for the serious nature of the offence.

There was widespread support for the length of the punishment imposed with former Liverpool player Graeme Souness telling Sky Sports News: "I think 10 games is about right.

"What he did on Sunday is something I've never seen in a game anywhere before."

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp agreed.

"I think you have to accept that the crime that he committed probably warranted a 10-game ban," he said.

"It was an awful act of brutality really what he did and now he won't play for such a long time - it's is going to hit him where it hurts because he wants to play football."

Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) chief executive Gordon Taylor said the length of the sanction sent out a "strong message" but that it was important that the player received counseling to make sure it did not happen again.

Not everyone backed the FA's decision.

"Players who break peoples' legs, who do horrible tackles, get a three-game ban," former Liverpool striker John Aldridge told Sky Sports News.

"It's inconsistent. For me, it's not right, it's over the top."

Controversy has followed Suarez since he joined Liverpool, with his antics often overshadowing his impact on the pitch.

He served an eight-match ban for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra last season and later angered United manager Alex Ferguson by failing to shake the French defender's hand before their league match in February last year.

He has also been regularly accused of diving to win penalties and free kicks, while in an FA Cup tie this season against minor league Mansfield Town he was again criticized for scoring a goal despite a blatant handball.

Until Manchester United forward Robin Van Persie's hat-trick against Aston Villa on Monday that secured the title, Suarez was leading scorer in the league with 23 goals and he is included on a six-player shortlist for PFA Player of the Year.

Hyundai Thinks Suicide Should Help Sell Cars: The Pipe Job Ad ...

Hyundai Thinks Suicide Should Help Sell Cars: The Pipe Job AdHyundai, the world?s fourth largest automobile manufacturer in the world, apparently believes showing a man trying to kill himself in one of their vehicles is good marketing. The ad, called ?Pipe Job? and created by the ad agency Innocean Europe, depicts a man taping a hose from a Hyundai ix35?s exhaust pipe into the cabin, trying to commit suicide.

It then shows the man sitting in the cabin, waiting to die.

A few frames later, the garage lights come back on, and the man opens the garage door. The tag line is, ?The New ix35 with 100% water emissions.?

Yes, very tasteful. Maybe if you were brain and dead and haven?t been alive for the past three decades. Nothing like making fun of people with mental illness, clinical depression, or a disability, is there Hyundai (and Innocean)??

Warning, we?ve included a copy of the video below. Do not continue on if you don?t wish to watch it.

I can imagine some of the other ideas that Hyundai and Innocean are also discussing right now:

  • A cancer patient is shown dying in a hospital bed, and asks for one last drink of water. They wheel her out to the ix35?s exhaust pipe and instruct her to drink away.
  • Lawn need watering? Just start up the ix35 and continually drive it around the yard, letting the water from the tailpipe drip onto the grass.
  • A poor family is shown holding their cupped hands under the ix35?s tailpipe, dying for a drink of water.

Here?s the offensive video. You?ve been warned, so don?t view it if you or someone you know has died by suicide in this manner:

This ad has particular poignancy for me ? and I suspect tens of thousands of other people around the world ? as I knew someone who took their life via this method. Rob was my childhood best friend, and one of the primary motivations for me going into public education and advocacy as my career rather than providing individual psychotherapy to patients. He died November 8, 1990, and his death is a memory that I?m reminded of nearly every week as I work on the resources that go to make up this site.

Seeing such a vivid depiction of the end of a man?s life ? to sell cars no less ? is not just in poor taste. It is thoughtless, and even mean-spirited. As though human life is worth so little, we can demonstrate someone failing at taking their own life to help promote the attributes of this stupid pile of metal. A Hyundai.

Criticism of the Hyundai Video

The Hyundai ad is incomprehensible in an age where we are finally making inroads in the public understanding of mental illness? Of reducing the discrimination and prejudice against those who have one. A depiction of suicide in the media ? even when reporting on a news item ? can up the rate of suicides temporarily, referred to as suicide contagion. Did the ad agency who produced this ad even know that? Did they care?

Does it make a point? If one can get past the gruesome darkness of the ad, I suppose the point that you can?t kill yourself in this particular Hyundai is noted. But really? Out of all the options you have to demonstrate a car?s eco-friendliness, this is the one you go with?

Hyundai North America is distancing itself from its European counterparts with this statement:

We at Hyundai Motor America are shocked and saddened by the depiction of a suicide attempt in an inappropriate UK video featuring a Hyundai. Suicide merits thoughtful discussion, not this type of treatment.

Further criticism and commentary can be found over on this article by Matthew Herper, Update: Hyundai North America Disavows ?Particularly Graphic And Dangerous? Car Ad.

I just have to shake my head that this ad got through multiple levels of management review and approval in two different companies. Everybody probably was congratulating themselves on producing an ?edgy? or ?thought provoking? ad ? while trying to sell pieces of steel on wheels.

Obama hosts female senators for White House dinner

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Dining on Alaskan halibut and slices of peach pie, President Barack Obama hosted the women of the Senate at the White House on Tuesday, laying the groundwork for better relations with lawmakers from both parties.

All 20 female senators ? 16 Democrats, four Republicans ? showed up for the dinner, the White House said. The closed-door dinner last about two hours.

Senators departed the White House quietly after the dinner, and aides offered few details about what was discussed, citing a longstanding rule that applies to the female senators' quarterly dinners: What happens at dinner stays at dinner.

But the White House said that Obama and the senators discussed budget issues, job creation and immigration reform as well as ways to reduce gun violence and expand educational opportunities for children. The president told his guests that he remained committed to ensuring that all resources remain available as the investigation continues into the Boston Marathon bombings, the White House said.

Obama's dinner with the Senate's female caucus followed a series of similar meetings he's held with lawmakers of both genders aimed at strengthening the lines of communication with Congress and improving prospects for compromise on second-term priorities like an immigration overhaul and a budget deal. Last week, Obama shared a meal with a dozen Senate Democrats at a hotel near the White House. He's hosted two similar dinners for Senate Republicans in recent weeks.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat from New York, said she suggested the meeting while traveling with Obama late last year to view hurricane damage.

"I said as you put together your agenda for this term, if you want a bipartisan, core group of people to start moving legislation, a great way to start is the women senators," Gillibrand said in an interview shortly before the dinner.

Gillibrand suggested Obama join one of the women's regularly scheduled dinners, but he one-upped them, offering to host them at the White House instead.

She said economic issues of importance to women would be on the agenda, such as equal pay, a higher minimum wage and Obama's proposal to expand access to preschool.

"The president always says if you want to out-innovate, out-educate, out-compete the competition, you're only going to do it with women leading the way," Gillibrand said.

Among the lawmakers who joined Obama for dinner were Sens. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., Deb Fischer, R-Neb., and Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., all of whom voted this month against the expanded background checks that Obama had pushed for as the central element of his proposals to reduce gun violence.

Gigabyte P2742G-CF1

Looking for an affordable gaming laptop? The Gigabyte P2742G-CF1 ($1,499.00 list) might fit the bill. In a category where prices regularly register in the thousands, it's nice to see a gaming rig that costs less than a used car. While the performance isn't quite as stunning as you'll find in other gaming laptops, the Gigabyte P2742G-CF1 does offer a longer lasting battery than more expensive competitors.

Design
As with most gaming laptops, Gigabyte didn't make this rig with portability in mind. When closed, it measures 1.92 by 16.3 by 10.9 inches (HWD)?roughly the same size as the Asus G75VW-DH72, and too big to fit into a standard laptop bag. The P2742G-CF1 also has a plastic chassis, but it's no lightweight, tipping the scales at just over 7 pounds (7.05), though it is lighter than the Asus G75VW-DH72 (8.7 pounds). Our review unit is all black?what Gigabyte confusingly calls "svelte black," though the laptop is by no means slim?but it's also available with an orange lid.

The full-size keyboard has the expected chiclet keys, with decent separation between individual keys, but no backlight and no real gap between the keyboard proper and the 10-key numeric pad. As a result, inattentive touch typists might find themselves drifting into the numeric pad with no discernible extra space to distinguish the two bodies of keys. The touchpad is decent sized?1.8 by 3.6 inches?but I did find myself wishing that it used separate right and left mouse buttons instead of a combined button bar.

The 17.3-inch display offers 1,920-by-1,080 resolution, with a matte coating to reduce glare. The resolution and color quality of the display is quite nice, and during benchmark tests and game testing I never saw any blurring or smearing. You may want to use two hands when opening and closing the lid, however, because the plastic lid and bezel flex quite a bit and the hinges are a little stiff.

A pair of two-watt speakers positioned above the keyboard provide decent sound, enhanced by THX TruStudio Pro. They won't equal a dedicated sound system, but they offer good volume and clear sound, with moderate bass. When tested with Silent Shout, by The Knife, the speakers offer richer low end than I had expected, but still can't top the integrated subwoofers found in the Asus G75VW-DH72 or the Maingear Nomad 17 Ultimate.

Features
On the right of the system you'll find two USB 3.0 ports, a combination USB 3.0/eSATA port, HDMI output, and a multiformat card reader (SD, MMS, MS Pro/Duo). On the left, a tray-loading Blu-ray drive lets you watch HD movies and burn DVDs, plus you'll find a single USB 2.0 port, and a trio of audio connections (headphone, mic, and S/PDIF). On the back is a VGA monitor connection and an AC power connector. Gigabit Ethernet will probably be your networking connection of choice, but 802.11n Wi-Fi does the trick without the cable, and Bluetooth 4.0 lets you wirelessly connect an array of devices.

For storage that balances speedy performance with affordable capacity, the Gigabyte P2742G-CF1 is outfitted with both a 128GB solid-state drive (SSD) and a 1TB 5,400 rpm hard drive. That combination provides more than enough space for a large library of installed games and locally stored media, while the SSD ensures snappy performance and rapid start up. With three slots for RAM, the system's 8GB of RAM can actually be bumped up to a whopping 24GB, so there is the opportunity for upgrading in the future.

Aside from Windows 8 and a few media utilities (for virtual surround sound, audio enhancement, and volume optimization) Gigabyte doesn't add any software to the Gigabyte P2742G-CF1. What it does add, however, is a two-year warranty covering the laptop against defect and a one-year warranty on the battery and power adapter.

Performance
Gigabyte P2742G-CF1 The P2742G-CF1 is equipped with a 2.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7-3630QM processor paired with 8GB of RAM. It's the same processor found in the MSI GT70 One-609US Dragon Edition and the Asus G75VW-DH72, but with half the RAM. The resulting performance is on par with other similarly equipped systems, as seen in PCMark 7, where it scored 4,564 points, falling between the Cyberpower Xplorer X6-9120 (4,446 points) and the MSI GT70 One-609US Dragon Edition (5,182 points).

Gigabyte P2742G-CF1

The difference in RAM led to significant gaps in Cinebench, where the P2742G-CF1 scored a respectable 4.75 points, but fell well behind both the MSI GT70 One-609US Dragon Edition (6.41) and the Asus G75VW-DH72 (6.44), despite the fact that all three utilize the same model of processor. Similar differences were seen in multimedia tests, where the Gigabyte finished Handbrake in 40 seconds and Photoshop CS6 in 4 minutes 56 seconds, as compared to the MSI GT70 One-609US Dragon Edition and the Asus G75VW-DH72, which both completed Handbrake in 36 seconds and Photoshop in 3:32.

The Gigabyte P2742G-CF1 is outfitted with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 660M with 2GB of dedicated memory. The single GPU offers playable performance in our gaming tests, offering 50 frames per second (fps) in Alien vs. Predator and 38 fps in Heaven, but only with resolution dropped to 1366 by 768 and detail settings dialed down. Competing systems, however, offer better graphics thanks to higher-powered GPUs?the MSI GT70 One-609US Dragon Edition, for example pumped out 35 fps in Aliens vs. Predator and 58 fps in Heaven, but did so at full 1920 by 1080 resolution, with all the eye candy turned up. Bottom line: You'll be able to play all of your games, but the overall performance will take a hit. That's the compromise you'll have to accept for the lower price.

While the performance isn't earth-shattering, the battery life is better than competitors are offering, lasting 4 hours 22 minutes in our rundown test. That's 10 minutes longer than the longest lasting competitor, the MSI GT70 One-609US Dragon Edition, over an hour longer than the Asus G75VW-DH72 (3:02), and nearly four times as long as the Maingear Nomad 17 (1:06). Battery life is generally the Achilles heel of gaming laptops, but because the Gigabyte P2742G-CF1 backs off on performance, the 77Wh battery stretches farther than most.

Conclusion
Lower prices in gaming laptops are almost always accompanied by reduced performance, and the Gigabyte P2742G-CF1 is no exception. Aside from the lower performance scores, however, the P2742G-CF1 still offers playable performance at medium graphics settings, and lasts longer than more expensive gaming rigs, making it a good choice for the gamer that prizes affordability and portability over raw performance. While the slightly more expensive Asus G75VW-DH72 remains our Editors' Choice for mid-range gaming laptop due to its better graphics performance, the Gigabyte P2742G-CF1 is still worth a look.

How Important Is Local Online Marketing For Small Businesses ...

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

As local market comprises of highly potential customers who are significant in driving new and repeated sales, there arises the need for local online marketing.

This article emphasizes on why small businesses should consider local online marketing as an important aspect of their overall marketing strategy.

Increasing numbers of people are using Internet to shop locally
According to a study ?User Wave View VII?, conducted by BIA/Kelsey and ConStat, 97% of all consumers use Internet for researching products and services in their local areas. These statistics prove that local online marketing is the best way to target prospective customers. Further, with almost all mobiles coming with Internet facilities, location based searches are also increasing.

Location based marketing involves customizing marketing messages as per the location and preferences of prospective customers. When a customer is looking for a business in a particular area, there are higher chances of your website appearing on the search results if your business has geo-specific content.

Consumers prefer local searches, as most of the location based search

Disorder rule linked to intelligence

A modification to one of the most fundamental laws of physics may provide a link to the rise of intelligence, cooperation - even upright walking.

The idea of entropy describes the way in which the Universe heads inexorably toward a higher state of disorder.

A mathematical model in Physical Review Letters proposes that systems maximise entropy in the present and the future.

Simple simulations based on the idea reproduce a variety of real-world cases that reflect intelligent behaviour.

The idea of entropy is fundamentally an intuitive one - that the Universe tends in general to a more disordered state.

The classic example is a dropped cup: it will smash into pieces, but those pieces will never spontaneously recombine back into a cup. Analogously, a hot cup of coffee will always cool down if left - it will never draw warmth from a room to heat back up.

But the idea of "causal entropy" goes further, suggesting that a given physical system not only maximises the entropy within its current conditions, but that it reaches a state that will allow it more entropy - in a real sense, more options - in the future.

Alex Wissner-Gross of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US and Cameron Freer from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, have now put together a mathematical model that ties this causal entropy idea - evident in a range of recent studies - into a single framework.

"In the past 10 to 15 years, there have been many hints from a variety of different disciplines that there was a deep link between entropy production and intelligence," Dr Wissner-Gross told BBC News.

The laws of thermodynamics

  • First law: Energy can be neither created nor destroyed (although, thanks to Einstein's most famous equation E=mc2, energy can come from or be turned into mass)
  • Second law: The entropy of an isolated system always rises. But put some energy in and order can be achieved - in a crystal of salt, in humans, even in galaxies
  • Third Law: As the temperature of an ordered system - like that salt crystal - approaches "absolute zero", entropy approaches its lowest level. But never zero, because everything, everywhere is at least a little bit disordered

"This paper is really the first result that clarifies what that link precisely is... to the point that it's prescriptive - it actually allows you to calculate in a sensible way answers to questions that couldn't reasonably be answered before."

The simplistic model considers a number of examples, such as a pendulum hanging from a moving cart. Simulations of the causal entropy idea show that the pendulum ends up pointing upward - an unstable situation, but one from which the pendulum can explore a wider variety of positions.

The researchers liken this to the development of upright walking.

Further simulations showed how the same idea could drive the development of tool use, social network formation and cooperation, and even the maximisation of profit in a simple financial market.

"While there were hints from a variety of other fields such as cosmology, it was so enormously surprising to see that one could take these principles, apply them to simple systems, and effectively for free have such behaviours pop out," Dr Wissner-Gross said.

'Beyond luck'

Raphael Bousso of the University of California Berkeley said: "It has always mystified me how well this principle models intelligent observers, and it would be wonderful if Alex's work could shed some light on this."

Prof Bousso showed in a 2007 paper in Physical Review D that models of the Universe that incorporated causal entropy were more likely to come up with a Universe that contains intelligent observers - that is, us.

However, he cautions that although the new paper bolsters the case for causal entropy, the idea still lacks explanatory power.

"The paper argues that intelligent behaviour, which is hard to quantify, can be reduced to maximising one's options, which is relatively easy to quantify. But it cannot explain intelligent behaviour from first principles," he told BBC News.

"It cannot explain how that 'intelligent agent' evolved in the first place, and why it seeks to maximise future options."

Axel Kleidon of the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Germany, who authored a 2010 paper in Physics of Life Reviews using maximised entropy to consider the machinery of life on Earth, said that the work "shows some very intriguing examples" but that only time would tell if causal entropy was as fundamental as it may seem.

"It seems that it is beyond just luck and coincidence," he told BBC News.

"On the other hand, I know from my own research that applying thermodynamics to real-world systems is anything but simple and straightforward... I think it is through more examples that (we will see) how practical their approach will be, compared to other thermodynamic approaches."
