A full-time photographer, Horn presented an edition of 20 prints and a digital projection that challenged visual perceptions of the world and invited a greater intimacy with it. At the exhibition opening, Fox, introducing the graduate work, described the images as "ephemeral poetry in motion".
Christensen's paintings were works of force, energy and rhythm that incorporated an underlying concern for nature and ecological balance.
A spatial design major now working part-time at EIT, Paterson also displayed work from her final degree year. A model, workboard and three panels tracked the development of her design for a flexible whanau home for her sister.
The 12-day exhibition was sponsored by EIT's School of Arts and Design for the prize-winning visual arts and design students.
Programme coordinator Nigel Roberts said the exhibited work, never previously displayed in a venue outside EIT, demonstrated the widely ranging talents of the institute's top graduates and the high skill levels achieved by those who gained the degree.

Former executives, bankers arrested over Olympus fraud (Reuters)
TOKYO (Reuters) ? Four months after one of Japan's biggest corporate scandals, police and prosecutors on Thursday arrested seven men, including a former Olympus Corp president and ex-bankers, over their role in a $1.7 billion accounting fraud at the medical equipment and camera maker.
Tokyo prosecutors arrested the company's ex-President Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, former Executive Vice President Hisashi Mori and former auditor Hideo Yamada on suspicion of violating the Financial Instruments and Exchange Law, officials said.
Also arrested were former bankers Akio Nakagawa and Nobumasa Yokoo and two others suspected of helping hide huge investment losses through complex M&A deals.
The three former executives had been identified by an investigative panel, commissioned by Olympus, as the main culprits in the fraud, seeking to delay the reckoning from risky investments made in the late-1980's bubble economy.
The arrests come as investors focus on who will run the once-proud company when its management steps down at an April 20 shareholders meeting, and whether Olympus will seek a capital tie-up to fix its balance sheet.
Olympus is banking on that April meeting marking a turning point in the scandal, with at least six of its 11-member board, including current President Shuichi Takayama, set to resign.
His successor is likely to be one of three board members the panel said were not responsible for the cover-up -- Masataka Suzuki, Kazuhiro Watanabe and Shinichi Nishigaki -- said a source familiar with the matter, who did not want to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue.
"The arrests of former executives won't impact possible tie-ups with Terumo, Sony, Fujifilm and others," said a sell-side equity manager at a Japanese firm, who did not want to be named as he is not authorized to talk to the media.
"Olympus continues to be very attractive to other companies because of its endoscope business."
Last year, the investigative panel found Kikukawa, Mori and Yamada had played leading roles in a 13-year scheme to hide the losses, and they are among 19 executives Olympus is suing over the scandal.
The panel said it found no evidence of involvement by organized crime, despite speculation that "yakuza" gangsters were somehow involved in the cover-up scheme.
An Olympus spokesman said the company would cooperate fully with the investigative authorities. It is also under investigation by law enforcement agencies in Japan, Britain and the United States.
Kikukawa's condominium house was among 20 sites raided in December by prosecutors. Kikukawa, who took over as president in 2001, was reportedly aware of the details of the cover-up.
Nakagawa, who began his banking career at Nomura Securities, was a founding member of the Axes group, which was awarded a huge $687 million advisory fee for Olympus' acquisition in 2008 of UK medical equipment firm Gyrus that was at the heart of the scandal.
Yokoo, another ex-Nomura banker, ran a consulting firm, Global Company, which was hired by Olympus in 2000 to scout for new businesses and steered investment into three small money-losing Japanese firms.
The scandal was exposed last October by then-chief executive Michael Woodford, a rare foreign CEO in Japan, who was sacked by the Olympus board after questioning dubious M&A deals that were later found to have been used to conceal the losses.
The affair also fanned concerns about lax corporate governance in Japan generally.
Olympus in December filed five years' worth of corrected financial statements plus overdue first-half results, revealing a $1.1 billion dent in its balance sheet, triggering talk it would need to merge or forge a business tie-up to raise capital.
On Monday, it forecast a $410 million full-year loss due largely to its ailing camera operations, but its core endoscope business appeared unscathed by the scandal, and its president said the firm might not need outside capital.

PETA Needs to Get a Little Class and Dignity (ContributorNetwork)
COMMENTARY | The People for the Ethical Treatment for Animals advocacy group continues to show the group's decision-makers have little taste and even less class. Thanks to a Valentine's Day ad reported by The Cutline, PETA again makes me wonder if the group is run by 15-year-old boys.
This ad features a young woman in a neck brace and underwear and refers to her vegan boyfriend's ability to "knock the bottom out of her" sexually. Really? How is this supposed to ethically treat animals? Sure, the idea is to make veganism seem sexy but all it shows is PETA has no class.
The group released an ad modeled after "Girls Gone Wild" entitled "Milk Gone Wild" that features young women raising their shirts to reveal bare udders instead of breasts.
Seriously? Yes, we live in a sexualized society but since when does caring about animals need to be sexed up?
Perhaps PETA should lend its time and money to helping animals such as abandoned and homeless pets rather than advocating a dietary lifestyle. Better yet, how about firing all of the people in charge and hire people who can come up with better ideas for advertising that aren't degrading, demeaning or just plain stupid.
I have never given money to PETA and never will. In fact, the organization will continue to confound me with the ridiculous causes it takes on and the methods to present the group's message. I believe in ethical treatment of animals and am very much an animal lover, but I will never support any organization that stoops to stunts and offensive messages.
Perhaps a better organization that is not so radical or ridiculous will rise up and make caring for animals appear less of a nutty fringe mindset. I would support such an organization. Better yet, maybe PETA people will develop some class and grow up.

Which future Flagship missions have been axed because of the budget cuts?
NASA has pulled out of two joint missions with the Europeans to Mars, an orbiter and a drill equipped rover. The European Space Agency is now in talks with Russia as a partner for these missions.
A Mars sample return mission and a mission that would have been aimed at Jupiter's moon Europa are now on indefinite hold. The Europa mission would have examined the surface ice field of that world which is thought to cover a subsurface ocean.

Five iranian artists to make their debut at the india art fair with dubai ...
New Delhi: Iran and India share a unique similarity in culture and past history. It is well known that India is home to the largest population of Parsees in the world who are originally from Iran. By introducing five Iranian artists ? Khosrow Hassanzadeh, Pooya Aryanpour, Amirali Ghasemi, Nosratollah Moslemian and Alireza Fani ? to the Indian audience at the India Art Fair from January 25, 2012 to January 29, 2012, Dubai-based art gallery, Gallery 1 x 1 hopes to rekindle interest in Iranian art.
Says Malini Gulrajani, Director, Gallery 1?1: ?India is a great place for Iranian art to be promoted in, enjoyed and understood. India Art Fair would be the perfect platform and starting point for this introduction, hoping it will bring about many collaborations and future artistic projects between these two countries.?
Apart from the Iranian artists, Gallery 1 x1 is also showing some renowned names of Indian contemporary art including Rameshwar Broota, Ravinder Reddy, Chittrovanu Mazumdar, Biju Joze and Simrin Mehra-Agarwal.
Born in 1963, Tehran, Khosrow Hassanzadeh? studied painting at Mojtama-e-Honar University (1989-91) and Persian Literature at Azad University (1995-99) both in Tehran. He is not only a visual artist but also an actor who lives and works in Tehran and London. For the fair, his silk screen work in acrylic and gold leaf titled Ya Ali Madad depicts Ali, the first Imam in the Shia tradition. Ali was a strong and humble man, famous for helping the poor. People revered his sword as the Khyber.
Says Vida Hayderi , Iranian/Canadian Curator who has partnered Gallery 1 x 1 in bringing the Iranian artists: ?In Iran, when people need help, they say ?Ya Ali Madad?. The calligraphy in Hassanzadeh?s paintings makes the letters dance and whirl like Sufi dervishes. The screen print is from an old photo of a pahalvan (wrestler) and holding hands on either side are a court intellectual, a Dervish, a General and Mullah. The pahlavan represents many aspects of Iranian culture that we are losing today.?
The other Iranian artist Alireza Fani, who studied graphic design at Chamran High School, is showing a series of archival prints in triptychs and polyptychs titled
In search of the concept which depict staged photographs of a woman sometimes mysteriously carrying a single alphabet, sometimes embracing it, sometimes staring at it, and sometimes even molding herself as one with it. Says Fani: ?This ?single alphabet? does not convey a specific message. It, in fact, is only a symbol of the many meanings that have encircled today?s woman.?
Fani reveals that his passion of taking black and white photographs began when he experimented with ?an expired black and white film and an old Russian enlarger? in his own lab at home. ?I can still remember the first photo that I printed there; a black and white image was slowly appearing on a paper under the red light and I was falling in love with that. That was an amazing experience.? He has also worked on several photography series since In Search of The Concept, including one titled Teheran 88 which has not been exhibited so far because of its socio-political content.
Iranian artist Amirali?Ghasemi?(1980, Iran) is a graphic designer, media artist and curator. He graduated in 2004 with a BA in graphic design from Central?Tehran?Azad University, with an emphasis on research into digital art history. Ghasemi is an?interdisciplinary?artist who uses various media from drawings to photography and from performance to video and interactive programs, his?approach?is mainly inspired by his?surroundings, everyday life, found objects and ready-mades to randomized engines, and multimedia programs designed for more interaction with the public. Photography is a focal part of his practice but he?doesn?t?bind himself with it often and shifts further back and forth between non material performance world and medium scale installations.
Ghasemi is showing an interactive video work titled Deep Inside which has an interactive interface with four colour stills. A projected large screen or on LCD monitor interactive program and a mouse will allow visitors?to control the speed of the characters??dreams and nightmares?depending on how far the mouse pointer is from that certain character.?Says Ghasemi: ?Deep inside was created in the frame of exhibition Deep Depression in 2004 and it?s one of its kind and an example of early interactive works which was made inside Iran.? In one word Deep Inside is a text to keep the balance between the inner soul and outer space.

While portraits take spectators to a traditional, historic past, they can be absolutely modern. The essence of these portraits expresses elegies and lyrics, destruction and creation, visibility and invisibility, and overlapping of several portraits and generations on a single portrait.??They are intertwined images of?hidden and evident meanings?that?recount dreams?and life.?
Among the Indian artists to watch out for at Gallery 1 x1 booth is certainly going to be Kolkata-based artist Chittrovanu Mazumdar, renowned for his eclectic use of material and medium. Agarwal whose wall-mounted installation comprising of 34 pieces in acrylic, stucco, wood and linen and titled Hierarchy has both a personal memory and the memory of places attached to it. Born in Kolkata, and a part of her family believed to have descended from the royal Jhargram dynasty, she has memories of a glorious past, full of maharajas and warriors, set in sumptuous palaces with a typically Oriental atmosphere.

Bobby Brown on Miss. stage: 'I love you, Whitney' (AP)
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. ? It was an emotional night for soul singer Bobby Brown as he performed Saturday night before thousands just hours after learning that his ex-wife Whitney Houston had died in Beverly Hills.
"First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all," he told fans gathered at a nearly sold-out 7,500-seat venue in northern Mississippi. "Second, I would like to say, `I love you, Whitney.' The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage."
Brown took the stage as part of the New Edition reunion tour at the Landers Center in Southaven, close to Memphis, Tenn. He said he decided to go on with the performance because fans had shown their loyalty to the group New Edition for more than 25 years. He performed about 10 songs over more than hour ? "My Preogative" and "Mr. Telephone Man" among them ? before he appeared visibly shaken on stage.
Brown suddenly appeared overcome with emotion as the concert wound down, wiping his face with his vest as the group prepared to sing a ballad. When the song began, he joined in, but his voice cracked. He then waved to the fans and walked off stage. The show ended shortly afterward.
Houston and Brown had a tumultuous 15-year marriage that ended in 2007.
In 1993, they had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina. Ten years later, police responded to a domestic violence call from Houston about Brown. Police found Houston with a cut lip and bruised cheek. She was in and out of drug rehabilitation during the mid-2000s, and appeared to hit a low point with her unsteady appearances in the 2005 reality TV show "Being Bobby Brown." She filed for legal separation the following year and the couple divorced in 2007.
Before New Edition took the stage, Landers Center executive director Todd Mastry had indicated Brown would go on as scheduled but wouldn't be available to talk with the media.
Mastry said he hadn't spoken with Brown, but had been backstage. Asked the mood there, he said, "It's what you would expect it to be when something like this happens ? respectful."
Singer Kevon Edmonds paid tribute to Houston on stage and said his thoughts and prayers were with her family, according to Mastry.
New Edition began its show with the five members coming onstage without Brown. He joined them to a standing ovation. They were all wearing burgundy red coats with black pants and white shirts, and Brown wore a black hat. As they began to perform, one group member said, "This one is for Whitney."
During an intermission, one of Whitney Houston's early hits, "You Give Good Love," played over the speakers. Fans stood up and began singing along with the song.
Khalilah Hollis, 34, of Horn Lake, Miss., said she was already in the building for the concert when she found out through Facebook that Houston had died.
"It's really sad that she passed away. She was an icon," Hollis said. She said that when she heard the news, she thought that perhaps Brown would not perform. But she was glad when he did go on.
She said Brown's words about Whitney were touching.
"He probably didn't want to go into details because he probably would have broken down," Hollis said.

Kabiru Sokoto's escape on January 18 was described by security sources as "unusual and suspicious" and it prompted President Goodluck Jonathan to sack the chief of police and his six deputies.
Islamist sect Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the bombing of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, on the outskirts of Abuja, which killed 37 people and wounded 57, the deadliest of a series of attacks at Christmas.
Police arrested Sokoto on January 17 and while they were taking him from the police headquarters to his house in Abaji, just outside Abuja, to conduct a search there, their vehicle came under fire and Sokoto escaped.
He was recaptured on Friday in the eastern state of Taraba, which borders neighboring West African country Chad.
"Yes, we arrested him this morning in a small hut in Mutum Biu in Taraba State. He's being flown to Abuja about now," a State Security Service source told Reuters.
Jonathan, who has been heavily criticized for failing to deal with Boko Haram's campaign of violence, will be relieved at Sokoto's recapture. Jonathan has said members of the sect have infiltrated the security services and he has ordered a comprehensive reorganization of the police force.
Boko Haram, which in the Hausa language of northern Nigeria means "Western education is sinful," is loosely modeled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.
It killed more than 500 people last year and more than 250 in the first weeks of 2012 in gun and bomb attacks, Human Rights Watch says.
