Mayor a chip off the old block party

A 20-year tradition of hot dogs, burgers and Italian sausages on Chesterfield Street came to an end last night, at least with Mayor Thomas M. Menino as the host of the annual Hyde Park Block Party.

?A lot of people helped me get to where I did. It?s part of a partnership we have in this city. So yeah, it?s a sad day, a little bit,? Menino told the Herald, adding ?you never know? if the outgoing mayor will host another block party when he leaves office next year.

Like he has over the past 20 years, Menino stood outside his humble house and greeted City Hall staffers, police officials, politicians and the common men and women who elected him.

?I am thanking them all, thanking them for being my supporters, thanking them for being part of the city of Boston and for the growth of the city,? Menino told the Herald.

Ellen Gillette, 50, a bank supervisor from Hyde Park who has been coming to Menino?s block party for the past two decades, was a little wistful as she stood in the 20-minute long reception line to greet the mayor.

?Thank you for being a great mayor for all these years? she told Menino. ?I?m sad to see this come to an end.?

Police Superintendent Bill Evans was among the scores of city workers who attended the event, ?Everyone is happy to see him doing well. We are losing a great leader.?

Attorney General Martha Coakley stopped by for her first Hyde Park barbeque to say hello to the mayor and his wife, Angela. ?It?s the end of an era? Coakley said. ?This may not be his last block party, but it will be his last block party as mayor.?

Menino?s former rival, 2009 mayoral candidate Michael Flaherty and current candidates Felix G. Arroyo, John Barros and Bob Consalvo, were among the politicians who made the pilgrimage to Readville.

?I?ve been coming to these for 20 years I?ve never missed it,? said Consalvo, a city councilor and Hyde Park native. ?I plan to keep the Hyde Park block party tradition alive.?
