Nested in cozy Garrett Hill is a recently opened watering hole known as The Garrett Hill Ale House. Easy to locate and find a parking spot, the bar/restaurant is a great place to grab a cold drink and watch the local sports games. And though it could be considered just another college bar, the Ale House welcomes patrons of all ages, as well as families.

We arrived on a Friday night around 8 p.m. and were presented with a welcoming, mahogany d?cor and several flatscreen TVs broadcasting playoff basketball. As soon as we walked in, the bartender gestured that we sit wherever we saw fit. After sitting at the closest table, we were greeted by a waiter with two menus and a dishcloth (to apologetically wipe down the table). Within another 5 minutes, the server had taken our orders and brought our drinks out immediately.

Given their large selection of American beers and spirits, we thought it only made sense to order ?A Flighty Neighbor,? which consisted of four different beers of our choice, at 5 ounces each. We decided on the following: Troegs Hopback Amber, Alagash White, Yards Brawler, and Honey Brown Ale. We loved not only the amount of beer choices, but the price was just as good ($7).

Within another ten minutes, our appetizer was served. Considering there were only four options for starters (including Wings and Chicken Fingers), we ended up ordering the American Cheddar Ale Dip. The appetizer consisted of two fried, average-sized soft pretzels with a hot & spicy cheese sauce (made with Casco Bay?s Rip Tide Red Ale). Though we enjoyed the dip overall, I was a little disappointed at the lack of food to dip once the pretzels were finished.

Only minutes after our dip was removed from the table, the server had our entr?es in front of us. As with the appetizer selections, the entr?e list was also a bit condensed, and I decided on the Roast Beef Sandwich. Served on a potato roll, the meal includes two, smaller-sized sandwiches full of hand-carved Angus beef and your choice of cheese, with Au Jus and Horseradish sauces on the side. I was completely satisfied with the order, and forced myself to leave there rest of the meal for leftovers.

Considering my girlfriend is a vegetarian, she really had only one option in terms of an entr?e: The Veggie Wrap. The wrap was served warm, and chock full of (almost all of) the promised fixings: mushrooms, spinach, onions, zucchini, and feta cheese. According to the menu, roasted red peppers should have been added, but were missing from the wrap. Other than that slight hiccup, she had no complaints whatsoever.

As we wrapped up the meal and awaited the check, groups of college kids came and went, mingling at the tables and the bar. A family of four had arrived as we were about to leave, indicating that locals have caught wind about The Garrett Ale House and the great food & drinks enjoyed by all ages. ?
