Risk assets soar on U.S. fiscal cliff hopes

NEW YORK (Reuters) - World stock markets and commodities surged on Monday, recovering some of the previous week's sharp losses as traders focused on politicians' comments indicating readiness to compromise to avoid the U.S. "fiscal cliff."

Wall Street stocks climbed almost 2 percent, extending a rally that began on Friday, while crude oil was up almost 3 percent. The S&P 500 closed above its 200-day moving average for the first time in the past eight sessions.

U.S. lawmakers indicated compromises were possible in negotiations to avert $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts due to start in January - the "fiscal cliff" that threatens to send the U.S. economy back into recession.

Legislators from both parties have indicated in recent days compromise was possible on key issues like raising tax rates for wealthy individuals, which previously seemed unlikely.

MSCI's world equity index <.miwd00000pus> jumped 2 percent, more than erasing the 1.8 percent drop it posted last week. Monday was the best day for the index since July 27.

"At this point, we haven't seen any of the details, so we're still a bit cautious but optimistic that we will see an agreement reached some time," said Joseph Tanious, global market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds in New York. "It's become fairly clear that both sides of the aisle are willing to compromise and want to negotiate."

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 207.65 points, or 1.65 percent, at 12,795.96. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 27.01 points, or 1.99 percent, at 1,386.89. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 62.94 points, or 2.21 percent, at 2,916.07.

Optimism in Europe over the prospects of a deal this week to release much-needed aid for Greece also lent support.

European officials are expected to discuss a two-year funding plan for Athens at a meeting on Tuesday, which would postpone any longer-term solution until after a September 2013 German general election.

European Central Bank policymaker Joerg Asmussen said at the weekend that the ministers were likely to agree to the deal and leave resolution of a longer-term debt stabilization plan for Greece, which is at the heart of a disagreement with the IMF, until later.

The euro rose 0.5 percent to $1.28, well above the two-month low of $1.2661 hit last week and near the top end of its recent range, suggesting the foreign exchange market expects an agreement on Greece.

"This message from the ECB would tell me that, yes, what we are heading to this week is an agreement that would keep Greece out of trouble for the next year or so," said Gilles Moec, senior European economist at Deutsche Bank.

European share markets rebounded from last week's lows, mainly on growing optimism over U.S. political negotiations.

The FTSE Eurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> of top European shares closed 2.3 percent higher, led by sectors tied to the pace of economic growth. Banks <.sx7p> climbed 3.6 percent, with U.S. shares of Barclays up 5.8 percent to $15.85.

In the region's main centers, London's FTSE 100 <.ftse>, was up 2.4 percent, with Frankfurt's DAX <.gdaxi> up 2.5 percent and Paris' CAC-40 <.fchi> gaining 2.9 percent. <.l><.eu/>

Safe-haven bond markets reflected the stronger risk appetite, with the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note down 8/32 in price to yield 1.6114 percent.

The 10-year German government bond fell in price, sending its yield to 1.358 percent from 1.326 percent on Friday. Traders saw room for yields to rise if euro zone policymakers reached an agreement at their meeting on Tuesday.

DOLLAR STRENGTH

In currency trading, the dollar briefly extended gains against the yen on expectations a new Japanese government will push the central bank to taking aggressive monetary stimulus measures to boost growth after next month's elections.

The greenback was slightly higher against the yen at 81.38 yen after rising to its highest since April 25.

The Bank of Japan began a two-day meeting on Monday but was not expected to take any new policy steps before the December 16 vote.

The rising hopes of a deal on closing the U.S. budget gap, which has clouded the outlook for global growth, spread through commodity markets, lifting oil, copper and gold.

Copper rallied 2.3 percent to $7,803.75 a ton on the London Metal Exchange, and gold rose $18.11 to $1,731.6 an ounce.

A 0.5 percent drop in the dollar index <.dxy>, which had eased from a two-month high hit on Friday, added to demand by making commodities priced in the greenback more affordable for buyers holding other currencies.

Brent crude rose above $111 a barrel as the escalating violence between Israel and the Palestinians fueled concern about supplies from the Middle East.

Investors fear the conflict may draw in other countries and possibly disrupt energy exports from the region, which supplies more than a third of the world's crude.

Brent crude for January delivery was up 2.5 percent and U.S. crude futures added 2.6 percent.

Halle Washington signs with Lady Bulldogs

ATHENS, Ga. -- Halle Washington, a 6-3, forward from Bossier City, La., inked a letter-of-intent to play basketball collegiately for the Georgia Lady Bulldogs on Thursday, head coach Andy Landers has announced.

Washington is rated as the nation's No. 30 overall prospect and No. 10 forward by ESPN's Hoopgurlz.

"Halle is obviously very well thought of on the national level and rightfully so," Landers said. "She a tremendous competitor...a warrior. She has a complete skill set, is eager to develop and fits very well into our style of play."

Washington was named second-team all-state by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association for Class 5A as a junior after averaging 14.9 points, 9.3 rebounds 2.6 blocks and 2.2 steals per game for Parkway High School. As a sophomore, Washington was tabbed honorable mention all-state and first-team All-Metro by the Shreveport Times.

Washington signed her papers at Parkway on Thursday morning.

"I told everyone that was there for the signing that what makes her such a special ballplayer is that Halle realizes she has a God-given ability and she works hard every single day to make the most of that," Parkway coach Aaron Megee said. "She's a hard worker who was blessed with skill and to be really tall. Halle competes every day to be the best she can be. That's what separates her from the other 6-2 kids that are out there."

Washington is the Lady Bulldogs' third signee of the weeklong NCAA early signing period. On Wednesday, Georgia received papers from Samantha Glodis and Sydnei McCaskill. BANGKOK (AP) ? The U.S. and Britain on Sunday warned about the risks of Israel expanding its air assault on the Gaza Strip into a ground war, while vigorously defending the Jewish state's right to protect itself against rocket attacks.

The remarks by President Barack Obama and Britain Foreign Secretary William Hague were part of a diplomatic balancing act by the West as it desperately seeks an end to the escalating violence without alienating its closest ally in the region.

"Israel has every right to expect that it does not have missiles fired into its territory," President Barack Obama said at a news conference in Bangkok at the start of a three-nation visit to Asia.

"If that can be accomplished without a ramping up of military activity in Gaza, that's preferable," Obama said. "It's not just preferable for the people of Gaza. It's also preferable for Israelis, because if Israeli troops are in Gaza, they're much more at risk of incurring fatalities or being wounded."

The president spoke shortly before an Israeli airstrike leveled a home in a residential neighborhood. Palestinian medical officials said at least 11 civilians, mostly women and children, were killed. The attack was the single deadliest incident of the 5-day-old Israeli operation.

The Israeli military said the target was a top rocket mastermind of the Islamic Jihad militant group. The claim could not be immediately verified, and the attack raised speculation that Israel could face increased international pressure if the civilian death toll continued to rise.

Hague said Hamas, Gaza's militant rulers, "bears principal responsibility" for initiating the violence and must stop all rocket attacks on Israel. But Hague also made clear the diplomatic risks of an Israeli escalation.

"A ground invasion is much more difficult for the international community to sympathize with or support, including the United Kingdom," he said.

Israeli officials say the airstrikes are aimed at ending months of rocket fire out of the Hamas-ruled territory. Israel began the offensive with an unexpected airstrike that killed Hamas' military chief, and since then has targeted suspected rocket launchers and storage sites.

The Mideast ally is now at a crossroads: launch a ground invasion or pursue Egyptian-led truce efforts. But with Israel and Hamas far apart on any terms of cease-fire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared at the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting: "The Israeli military is prepared to significantly expand the operation."

The crisis threatened to overshadow Obama's trip to Asia, which includes stops in Myanmar and Cambodia as part of a broader effort to expand the U.S. economic and military presence in a region long dominated by China.

So far, the U.S. has thrown its weight behind Israel, and Obama has called on Egypt and Turkey to intervene on Israel's behalf. Obama said he has told Egypt's president, Mohammed Morsi, and Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan that "those who champion the cause of the Palestinians should recognize that if we see a further escalation of the situation in Gaza, then the likelihood of us getting back on any kind of peace track that leads to a two-state solution is going to be pushed off way into the future."

Obama also pointed to the next 48 hours "to see what kind of progress we can make."

Members of the U.S. Congress, which overwhelmingly supports Israel, criticized Egypt and Turkey for not doing enough to intervene. They said all eyes were on Morsi, Egypt's first civilian and freely elected leader.

"Egypt, watch what you do and how you do it," said Sen. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., in an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press." ''You're teetering with the Congress on having your aid cut off if you keep inciting violence between the Israelis and the Palestinians."

In a separate interview on ABC's "This Week," Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, called Egypt's response to the crisis "pretty weak" so far.

"I think that they're going to have to take some very serious steps diplomatically to make it clear to Hamas that they're going to lose support in the Arab world if they continue these rocket attacks on Israel," said Levin, D-Mich.

Lawmakers also blamed Iran for arming Hamas militants, and questioned Egypt's role in that.

"My guess is there has to be some tacit involvement in Egypt and the border or these things wouldn't be getting in to Gaza," said Rep. C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., said he thinks the threat of a ground war is overblown.

"I don't think the Israelis really want a ground war," he told "Fox News Sunday." ''They'll go into Gaza if they feel they need to, to eliminate the remainder of the missiles. ... So really, the decision is up to Hamas, as to whether there will be a ground invasion of Gaza or not."

Alumni of Canadian college angry over honorary degree for Carter

TORONTO (JTA) -- Queen's University in Canada is facing a backlash from some Jewish alumni over its decision to confer an honorary degree to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, a strong critic of Israel.

Shimon Fogel, head of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs,?told the National Post newspaper that?his organization has received about 50 "angry and frustrated inquiries" from Queen's graduates concerned that the university in Kingston, Ontario, will confer the degree on Carter, the Nobel Peace Prize winner who has described Israel as an apartheid state.

"It's just a huge lightning rod for distress and disappointment," Fogel told the Post. "[Carter] simply doesn't meet the test of somebody that is seeking to offer a constructive contribution towards advancing peace. And it's in that context that we'd express real disappointment that a leading institution like Queen's would further legitimize or validate him by conferring on him this kind of award."

Carter, 88, and his wife, Rosalynn, are expected to attend the Queen's convocation in Kingston on Wednesday to accept honorary degrees paying tribute to "their philanthropic and advocacy work in areas such as housing and mental health," according to a statement from Queen's principal Daniel Woolf on the university website.

It will be Carter's first honorary degree from a Canadian university.

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs pointed to Carter's 2006 book "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid," in which the former president characterized Israel as an apartheid state and questioned its commitment to a two-state solution. Three years later Carter apologized to the American Jewish community for "stigmatizing Israel" and asked for forgiveness.

While he's sure Queen's intended to honor Carter for his human rights work alone, Fogel said the university "failed to do their due diligence that would have flagged [his views on Israel] as problematic."

EPA turns down states' request for ethanol waiver

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Environmental Protection Agency has denied requests from several governors to waive production requirements for corn-based ethanol.

A renewable fuels law requires that 13.2 billion gallons of ethanol be produced by this year and 15 billion gallons be produced by 2015. That's good for corn farmers, but it's angered poultry, hog and cattle farmers. They say they've seen big jumps in corn-based feed costs as corn is diverted to make ethanol vehicle fuel.

States requesting the waiver say reduced corn production due to this year's drought has made the problem even worse.

Gov. Mike Beebe, D-Ark., said in a letter to the EPA in August that ethanol production was taking a "terrible toll" on animal agriculture in his state and that consumers would pay more for food as a result.

Governors of North Carolina, New Mexico, Georgia, Texas, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Utah, and Wyoming also asked for the waiver, along with members of Congress and a coalition of farm groups and other industries that have opposed increased ethanol production.

The EPA said Friday that the agency has studied the effects of waiving the requirement and officials believe it would have had little impact on corn prices.

"We recognize that this year's drought has created hardship in some sectors of the economy, particularly for livestock producers," said Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator of the EPA's Office of Air and Radiation. "But our extensive analysis makes clear that congressional requirements for a waiver have not been met and that waiving the Renewable Fuel Standard will have little, if any, impact."

Under the EPA's interpretation of the renewable fuels law, first passed in 2005 and then significantly expanded in 2007, it is not easy to qualify for a waiver. The EPA can grant a waiver if the agency determines that the set ethanol production would "severely harm" the economy of a state, region or the entire country. It's not enough if the standard just contributes to the harm, the EPA said, noting the agency also has a high threshold for the degree of harm done.

A coalition of livestock, poultry and dairy organizations reacted angrily to the decision.

"We are extremely frustrated and discouraged that EPA chose to ignore the clear economic argument from tens of thousands of family farmers and livestock and poultry producers that the food-to-fuel policy is causing and will cause severe harm to regions in which those farmers and producers operate," the coalition said in a statement.

Environmental groups also have opposed increased ethanol production, saying the excess corn planting is tearing up the land.

Scott Faber, a lobbyist for the Environmental Working Group, said this most recent waiver denial may further energize ethanol opponents to lobby Congress to repeal the entire renewable fuels law and not "tinker with a safety valve that is too tight for either a Democratic or Republican administration to turn."

The Bush administration turned down a request by Texas Gov. Rick Perry in 2008 to waive the mandate because of drought in his state.

Petraeus: CIA blamed terrorists for Libya attack

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Testifying out of sight, ex-CIA Director David Petraeus told Congress Friday that classified intelligence showed the deadly raid on the U.S. Consulate in Libya was a terrorist attack but the administration withheld the suspected role of al-Qaida affiliates to avoid tipping them off.

The recently resigned spy chief explained that references to terrorist groups suspected of carrying out the violence were removed from the public explanation of what caused the attack so as not to alert them that U.S. intelligence was on their trail, according to lawmakers who attended Petraeus' private briefings.

He also said it initially was unclear whether the militants had infiltrated a demonstration to cover their attack.

The retired four-star general addressed the House and Senate intelligence committees in back-to-back, closed-door hearings as questions persist over what the Obama administration knew in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks and why its public description did not match intelligence agencies' assessments.

After the hearings, lawmakers who questioned Petraeus said he testified that the CIA's draft talking points in response to the assault on the diplomatic post in Benghazi that killed four Americans referred to it as a terrorist attack. Petraeus said that reference was removed from the final version, although he wasn't sure which federal agency deleted it.

Adding to the explanation, a senior U.S. official familiar with the drafting of the points said later that a reason the references to al-Qaida were deleted was that the information came from classified sources and the links were, and still are, tenuous. The administration also did not want to prejudice a criminal investigation in its early stages, that official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the process publicly.

Democrats said Petraeus made it clear the change was not done for political reasons during President Barack Obama's re-election campaign.

"The general was adamant there was no politicization of the process, no White House interference or political agenda," said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif. "He completely debunked that idea."

But Republicans remain critical of the administration's handling of the case. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said Petraeus' testimony showed that "clearly the security measures were inadequate despite an overwhelming and growing amount of information that showed the area in Benghazi was dangerous, particularly on the night of Sept. 11."

In fact, Petraeus told lawmakers that protesters literally walked in and set fire to the facility, according to a congressional official who attended the briefing. U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens died from smoke inhalation. Petraeus said security at the CIA annex was much better, but the attackers had armaments to get in.

Separately on Friday, the Democratic leader in the Senate rejected a request from John McCain and two other senators for a Watergate-style congressional committee to investigate the Benghazi attack. In a letter to McCain, Sen. Harry Reid said several committees in the House and Senate are already investigating and he would not allow the Senate to be used as a "venue for baseless partisan attacks." Republican House Speaker John Boehner also said this week that a special committee was not necessary.

Petraeus, who had a long and distinguished military career, was giving his first Capitol Hill testimony since resigning last week in disgrace over an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. Lawmakers said he did not discuss that scandal except to express regret about the circumstances of his departure and say that Benghazi had nothing to do with his decision to resign.

He was brought to a secure room beneath the Capitol, avoiding crowds of photographers and television cameras.

Petraeus testified that the CIA draft written in response to the raid referred to militant groups Ansar al-Shariah and al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb but that those names were replaced with the word "extremist" in the final draft, according to a congressional staff member. The staffer said Petraeus testified that he allowed other agencies to alter the talking points as they saw fit without asking for final review, to get them out quickly.

The congressional officials weren't authorized to discuss the hearing publicly and described Petraeus' testimony to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., said Petraeus explained that the CIA's draft points were sent to other intelligence agencies and to some federal agencies for review. Udall said Petraeus told them the final document was put in front of all the senior agency leaders, including him, and everyone signed off on it.

"The assessment that was publicly shared in unclassified talking points went through a process of editing," Udall said. "The extremist description was put in because in an unclassified document you want to be careful who you identify as being involved."

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., said it remained unclear how the final talking points developed. The edited version was used by U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice five days after the attack when the White House sent her out for a series of television interviews. Republicans have criticized Rice for saying it appeared the attack was sparked by a spontaneous protest over an anti-Muslim video.

"The fact is, the reference to al-Qaida was taken out somewhere along the line by someone outside the intelligence community," King said. "We need to find out who did it and why."

King said Petraeus had briefed the House committee on Sept. 14, and he did not recall Petraeus being so positive at that time that it was a terrorist attack. "He thought all along that he made it clear there was terrorist involvement," King said. "That was not my recollection."

After two hours with Petraeus, the Democratic chairman of the Senate's intelligence committee and the panel's top Republican sparred over Rice's televised comments.

Chairman Dianne Feinstein of California said Rice relied on "unclassified talking points at a very early stage. ... I don't think she should have been pilloried for this."

Feinstein recalled the faulty intelligence of the George W. Bush administration, used to justify the invasion of Iraq in concluding that country had weapons of mass destruction.

"A lot of people were killed based on bad intelligence," she said. Feinstein added that mistakes were made in the initial intelligence on Benghazi, but she said, "I don't think that's fair game" to blame Rice ? who has been mentioned as a possible nominee for secretary of state. "To say she is unqualified to be secretary of state I think is a mistake."

Top committee Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia said Rice had gone beyond the talking points.

"She even mentioned that under the leadership of Barack Obama we had decimated al-Qaida. She knew at that point in time that al-Qaida was responsible in part or in whole for the death of Ambassador Stevens," Chambliss said.

Schiff, the California congressman, said Petraeus had said Rice's comments in the television interviews "reflected the best intelligence at the time that could be released publicly."

"There was an interagency process to draft it, not a political process," Schiff said. "They came up with the best assessment without compromising classified information or source or methods. So changes were made to protect classified information."

Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., said it's clear that Rice "used the unclassified talking points that the entire intelligence community signed off on, so she did completely the appropriate thing." He said the changes made to the draft account for the discrepancies with some of the reports that were made public showing that the intelligence community knew it was a terrorist attack all along.

Lawmakers spent hours Thursday interviewing top intelligence and national security officials, trying to determine what intelligence agencies knew before, during and after the attack. They were shown a video to illustrate the chronology of the attack, which edited together security video from the consulate and surveillance footage taken by an unarmed CIA Predator drone, and even local Libyan cellphone footage taken from YouTube showing Stevens being carried out by people who looked like they were trying to rescue him.

A U.S. official who viewed it said the video shows clearly there was no demonstration prior to the attack, and then, suddenly armed men started streaming into the mission. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

I am only covering this niche here in my blog to make sure it is understood that we are very much aware of all that it takes to buy properties at Public Foreclosure Sales. However, it is the only niche I am going to advise beginning investors to stay away from.? For this reason, I?m only going to spend a little of our time on this niche.

In my opinion the risks outweigh the potential for gain to the point that I see no reasons to consider buying property at public auctions in today?s market. Public Foreclosure Sales, also called Courthouse auctions, are fraught with risk.

• What are downsides of this niche?
  • Real estate investors need to be aware these foreclosure sales ? called Trustee?s Sales, Public Foreclosure Sales or Sheriff?s Sales? are a required part of the foreclosure process and are different from the public auctions run by auction houses on behalf of lenders, homebuilders or home sellers. The word auction used to describe these sales is actually extremely inaccurate as the minimum bid usually starts at the total amount owed to the mortgage lender which in this market is usually way over the value of the property.
  • Bidders are generally not allowed to inspect the property (and often occupied by angry tenants who are losing their home).
  • The property or title may not be insurable, and in 11 states, the prior owner, sub lien holders, or even the Internal Revenue Service may redeem the property within a set period.
  • ?Winning? bidders are essentially buying the 1st position of the loan. Therefore, buyers need to determine if there are senior liens, unpaid property taxes, IRS income tax liens, mechanic?s liens, judgment liens, easements or zoning violations before buying. All property liabilities become your responsibility whether you know about them or not, when you buy a property at any public foreclosure sales.
  • All sales are final the day of the sale ? no inspection clause or addendum of any kind is allowed.
  • The terms are fixed (There is no negotiating).
  • Competitive bidding combined with a declining market leaves little room, if any room at all, to profit.

I believe buying foreclosures at the courthouse steps is one of the most dangerous ways of buying real estate. Before investors consider public foreclosure sales , they should learn how auctions are conducted, what special ground rules apply and what risks are involved. I would also urge potential foreclosure investors to do plenty of research on the property ahead of time. Moreover, I recommend you know your state laws. For instance California buyers should read and understand the California Civil Codes, section 2924 and 1695, covering some of the legal aspects of foreclosures in that state. Buying a home at auction is a complicated procedure and the rules often vary from state to state. ?There is a lot of homework and legwork that has to be done. These are just some examples of potential problems facing auction investors.

In summary, if you know the rules, you might be able to find a profitable deal. However, if you don?t know the rules of the game you are most likely going to find yourself financially upside down with a property you wish you never laid your eyes on.

5-hour Energy Drink Ingredients Cited By USFDA, Living Essentials Drink May Be Linked To 13 Deaths

FDA spokeswoman Shelly Burgess told the New York Times 5-hour Energy, sold by Living Essentials, has been mentioned in some 90 FDA filings since 2009, including more than 30 that involved serious or life-threatening events like heart attacks, convulsions, and in one case, a spontaneous abortion.

According to the newspaper, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported late last year that more than 13,000 emergency room visits in 2009 were associated with energy drinks alone.

A recent report by Beverage Digest, cited by Reuters, suggests that the highly caffeinated beverages are the fastest-growing type of soft drink in the United States, with sales increasing 17 percent last year to about $9 billion.

Elaine Lutz, spokeswoman for Living Essentials, the company that distributes 5-hour Energy, said in a statement, obtained by Reuters, that the product "is not an energy drink" (the so-called shot comes in a bottle that holds less than 2 ounces).

"Living Essentials," the statement went on, "takes reports of any potential adverse event tied to our products very seriously. We fully comply with all of our reporting requirements." The company was "unaware of any deaths proven to have been caused by the consumption of 5-hour Energy."

5-Hour Energy said on its website that its energy shot contains the same amount of caffeine as 12 ounces of the leading cup of premium coffee.

MILWAUKEE (DTN) -- Benchmarking your financials can show how you stack up against your peers. But, for economists, it can also expose some startling observations about farming's best and worst money managers.

Bottom-tier farmers in the Iowa Farm Business Association returned a profit only two years since 1959, but high profit farms have accelerated their advantages over the last decade.

For Iowa State University economist Mike Duffy, one revelation has been how poorly a large subset of agricultural producers has performed, no matter the commodity cycle, interest rate or inflation scenario over more than 50 years. At the same time, top performers rarely stumble and are setting the pace for cash rents and farm consolidations across the Midwest.

With rare exceptions since 1959, the bottom third of Iowa producers enrolled in the state's farm business record-keeping systems have lost money farming, Duffy told the audience at last week's National Agricultural Bankers conference. For example, these poor performers only showed positive returns twice in 52 years -- in 1973 and again in 2011. Both were the high water marks for U.S. grain prices of their generations. The records reflect real farm profitability, not books kept for tax reasons, he added.

In contrast, those in the top third of their class have consistently earned a profit since 1959. Only in 1981--on the heels of the Russian Grain Embargo and at the height of the Federal Reserve's painful credit rationing policy--did top performers dip into the red.

More recently, the contrast between these operator groups has widened. Since 2003, the top third of Iowans in this study have amassed a string of highly profitable years, culminating with record profits above $450,000 per farm in 2011. The poorest performers made money as well that year, but about $400,000 less per farm on average.

Robert Craven, director of the Center for Farm Financial Management at the University of Minnesota, notices the same phenomenon studying farm records in his database.

"The top group of producers has really taken off compared to the average in the last few years," Craven said. The top 20% of operators in his database average $1.9 million in gross farm income in 2011, owned assets of $4.4 million and netted $842,000 apiece that year.

Why does it matter? It's these top-notch operators who are spearheading much of the consolidation in agriculture by driving competition for cash rents and land sales, Duffy added.

High-profit farms have managed to acquire more assets while keeping their debt to asset ratios in a safe zone. In his opinion, much of the 300% appreciation in Corn Belt farmland values since 2000 isn't irrational exuberance, it's grounded in the cash generated from high-profit farms.

Futures Movers: Oil holds steady after inventory data

HONG KONG (MarketWatch) ? Benchmark U.S. crude-oil futures sat flat during electronic trading early Thursday, getting only the slightest of boosts from data showing lower-than-expected crude inventories.

Crude oil for December delivery /quotes/zigman/2084380 CLZ2 -0.01% ?rose 1 cent, or less than 0.1%, to $86.33 a barrel on Globex during Asia trading hours.

The slight increase extended a 94-cent jump for the contract to settle at $86.32 a barrel Wednesday on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

After Wednesday?s settlement, the American Petroleum Institute said that crude-oil supplies rose a less-than-expected 1.35 million barrels for the week ended Nov. 9.

The more closely watched U.S. Energy Information Administration report was due out later Thursday, with a Platts survey tipping expectations for a 1.5 million-barrel increase in crude-oil stocks. Read: Oil supply up more than 1 million barrels: API.

GFT technical analyst Fawad Razaqzada said crude-oil contracts have recently been supported by a weaker dollar and geopolitical concerns in the Middle East.

?The fact that [crude oil] has managed to hold above $85 for a number of sessions now is technically bullish,? said Razaqzada.

The dollar made slight gains during Asian hours Thursday, with ICE dollar index /quotes/zigman/1652083 DXY +0.04% ?inching higher to 81.192 from 81.111 in late North American trade Wednesday.

Among other energy products Thursday, heating-oil for December delivery /quotes/zigman/2101426 HOZ2 +0.19% rose 0.2% to $2.99 a gallon, and gasoline for delivery in the same month /quotes/zigman/2333556 RBZ2 +0.28% ?increased 0.7% to $2.70 a gallon.

Natural-gas futures for December /quotes/zigman/2184457 NGZ12 +0.61% ? rose 0.3% to $3.77 per million British thermal units.
