Windows 8: Are PC People Out Of Touch?

This post-PC era we've embarked on sure seems to have a lot of PCs in it.

That's what I think every time I'm in a shared space where people do work--coffeehouses, airports, co-working offices, and so forth. Take the coffee joint I visit a couple of times a week. Unlike some spots, people seem to go here to?work. Good luck finding a seat if you arrive much after 9 on a weekday morning. They're occupied by salespeople, developers, designers, entrepreneurs, students, and?navel-gazing writers. It strikes me as a fairly representative sample of the modern mobile workforce. And although I'm generalizing, they're all using laptops. (Plenty of the laptops are Macs, but that's a different story.)

RIM preps enterprise roadshow, chafes at iPad Gartner prediction

ORLANDO---Research in Motion is moving to protect its base with a tour of enterprises to sell corporations on BlackBerry 10 as well as its mobile device management chops.

Given that a tour is underway---RIM has a few sessions at Gartner Symposium here to court CIOs---the company didn't need to be kicked around. But RIM did take a few shots on Monday. First, Gartner research chief Peter Sondergaard said that in two years there will be more Apple iPad devices than BlackBerries in corporations. Then, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) said in a solicitation document that it is choosing the iPhone over RIM's BlackBerry.

I caught up with Jeff Holleran, senior director, enterprise product management, and Vivek Bharwaj, head of RIM's software portfolio, to talk shop and the company's prospects.

First, Bharwaj said that Sondergaard's take on the iPad overtaking the BlackBerry needs to consider a bit more nuance. First, Bharwaj didn't see Gartner's assumptions, but the larger point is RIM isn't just a hardware vendor. It has multiple points of presence in corporations. In other words, devices don't tell the tale.

That non-answer has some truth to it. RIM's booth at the Gartner CIO powwow garnered interest even though the company had nothing to show. The crowd wasn't on the same level as the CIOs flooding Windows 8 demos or Splunk, but considering RIM is in a holding pattern the interest was solid.?

My talk with Holleran and Bharwaj was pretty wide ranging. Here are the highlights.

• Neither executive was going to talk about when BlackBerry 10 devices were going to land in the first quarter exactly, but both were pleased with the early reaction from telecom providers, developers and customers.
• Given that Google recently killed Motorola's Webtop approach---a concept I liked but thought was too early---I asked Bharwaj whether RIM would try something similar. After all, BlackBerry 10 is supposed to be a computing platform and in the enterprise a smartphone as PC processor could work. He said:

The model itself is a viable one, but the hardware (laptop shell) wasn't affordable. There also needs to be an understanding of what people need in a mobile office. It's not the same thing as what's on the smartphone. QNX has that maturity to be on par with a desktop. From QNX we could build out a mobile office.

• Bharwaj painted a scenario where a BlackBerry could work in an hoteling arrangement in corporate offices and would plug into a dock and keyboard. Note that Bharwaj was thinking aloud. First, RIM needs the BlackBerry 10 rollout to be a success.
• On mobile device management (MDM) software, Holleran said RIM is converting pilots into production systems. BlackBerry Enterprise Server has 200,000 touch points. The majority of MDM has been BlackBerry devices, but RIM is now managing iOS and Android units too. Holleran added that BlackBerry 10's ability to use work and personal personas should satisfy workers and IT. Holleran, however, noted that there was some mixed emotions about having to manage other devices. He said:

The last thing we wanted to do was manage other devices, but customers asked for it. We know it's a heterogeneous world in the enterprise.

• Competing in MDM. Holleran said that there's a lot of fear uncertainty and doubt campaigns in the MDM space. For instance, customers are asking whether RIM will survive largely because an MDM startup has raised funding and is talking smack.
• The UI learning curve. BlackBerry 10's features are promising, but I asked Bharwaj about the learning curve. There are gestures that will be new and people are used to clicking icons all the time. "There's a lot of fatigue around clicking buttons," said Bharwaj. He added that the ability to do things with one hand on the BlackBerry will be a selling point. However, RIM, like Microsoft and Windows Phone, will have to retrain consumers. "For the existing base the learning curve won't be steep," said Bharwaj.
• Does hardware matter? I asked Bharwaj whether RIM had to do anything special with the hardware design to manufacture some kind of cool factor. He said he was confident that RIM's distinctive designs will continue to impress.
• RIM's churn factors. Bharwaj said RIM customers have left because of the supply of applications, the browser and touch interface. "We would not launch BlackBerry 10 if we didn't have those three boxes checked off," he said.

How fear can skew spatial perception

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? That snake heading towards you may be further away than it appears. Fear can skew our perception of approaching objects, causing us to underestimate the distance of a threatening one, finds a study published in Current Biology.

"Our results show that emotion and perception are not fully dissociable in the mind," says Emory psychologist Stella Lourenco, co-author of the study. "Fear can alter even basic aspects of how we perceive the world around us. This has clear implications for understanding clinical phobias."

Lourenco conducted the research with Matthew Longo, a psychologist at Birkbeck, University of London.

People generally have a well-developed sense for when objects heading towards them will make contact, including a split-second cushion for dodging or blocking the object, if necessary. The researchers set up an experiment to test the effect of fear on the accuracy of that skill.

Study participants made time-to-collision judgments of images on a computer screen. The images expanded in size over one second before disappearing, to simulate "looming," an optical pattern used instinctively to judge collision time. The study participants were instructed to gauge when each of the visual stimuli on the computer screen would have collided with them by pressing a button.

The participants tended to underestimate the collision time for images of threatening objects, such as a snake or spider, as compared to non-threatening images, such as a rabbit or butterfly.

The results challenge the traditional view of looming, as a purely optical cue to object approach. "We're showing that what the object is affects how we perceive looming. If we're afraid of something, we perceive it as making contact sooner," Longo says.

"Even more striking," Lourenco adds, "it is possible to predict how much a participant will underestimate the collision time of an object by assessing the amount of fear they have for that object. The more fearful someone reported feeling of spiders, for example, the more they underestimated time-to-collision for a looming spider. That makes adaptive sense: If an object is dangerous, it's better to swerve a half-second too soon than a half-second too late."

The researchers note that it's unclear whether fear of an object makes the object appear to travel faster, or whether that fear makes the viewer expand their sense of personal space, which is generally about an arm's length away.

"We'd like to distinguish between these two possibilities in future research. Doing so will allow us to shed insight on the mechanics of basic aspects of spatial perception and the mechanisms underlying particular phobias," Lourenco says.

Pomegranate may inhibit metastatic breast cancer

(NaturalNews) Pomegranate juice is already known to be active against several cancers, but a new study out of California has just shown for the first time that it potently inhibits three key processes involved in breast cancer metastasis. The researchers were so impressed, they remarked that pomegranate juice is "potentially a very effective treatment to prevent cancer progression in general."Pomegranate juice has already shown cytotoxicity to a variety of cancer cell lines in lab studies. This has been further validated by pre-clinical studies on lab animals showing that oral feeding of pomegranate extract inhibits the growth of lung, skin, colon and prostate tumors. So compelling is the lab evidence that 10 clinical trials have been registered with the NIH to use pomegranate extract against cancer (nine trials on prostate cancer, one on follicular lymphoma). Clinical success has already been demonstrated in a Phase II trial for prostate cancer: PSA doubling time was significantly increased for those patients taking a pomegranate extract in pill form which is equivalent to eight ounces of pomegranate juice. Now it appears that pomegranate juice may also be effective against breast cancer.Researchers at the University of California Riverside applied two different concentrations of pomegranate juice (one and five percent) to ER+ and ER- breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MD-MBA-231) as well as to healthy cells (MCF10A). The result: one percent juice completely stopped cancer cell growth in both cancer cell lines, while five percent juice stopped growth and also killed significant portions of the cancer cells. More importantly, even the one percent juice stimulated the expression of genes that suppressed the metastatic process in several ways. First, cancer cell adhesion was significantly increased, which is important in keeping the cancer cells clumped together so they don't invade neighboring tissues. Second, the ability of the cancer cells to migrate was significantly suppressed. Third, the chemical attraction of the cancer cells towards bones (chemotaxis to SDF1-alpha) was markedly decreased (thereby inhibiting bone metastases). Most impressive of all was that none of these effects were seen on the normal breast cells.

In addition to the above effects, the pomegranate juice potently suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokines/chemokines while increasing the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines. This is important, as increased inflammation is now understood to accelerate the metastatic process, and cancer patients with increased inflammation markers usually have a worse prognosis.

Achieving the one percent concentration of pomegranate juice as used in this study might not be easy since it would translate into a 165 lb (75 kg) woman drinking 24 ounces (three cups) of pomegranate juice, and that's assuming all the active phytochemicals (ellagic acid, luteolin, pucinic acid) are absorbed intact and distributed evenly throughout the body (pharmacokinetic studies tell us that isn't the case). However, the success in treating prostate cancer with just one cup daily of pomegranate juice (or equivalent pill) indicates that some level of protection is also likely for breast cancer. If you choose to use pomegranate to fight or avoid breast cancer, you may want to consider adding soy (which contains genistein), or a genistein supplement. That's because a recent study showed that the combination of pomegranate juice and genistein inhibited growth of, and killed, MCF-7 breast cancer cells better than either agent alone.

Problems with Ahnentafel Reports in FTM 2006 & 2011 - Family ...

Hello,

I am trying to create a pdf of an ahnentafel report in Family Tree Maker and having trouble gettting it to work. The main program that I use is Family Tree Maker 2006, because overall it works the best, but I also have Family Tree Maker 2011 on my computer. Right now neither of them is capable of creating a pdf of an ahnentafel report.

I can view ahnentafel reports in FTM 2006, but when I try to create a pdf the program freezes and crashes.

If I use FTM 2011, I can get into the screen where I can tell the program to generate an ahnentafel report, but I can't actually see one because the program either infinitly says its loading and does nothing (for hours) or freezes and crashes.

The point of creating a pdf is so that I can email what I have found to relatives who do not have Family Tree Maker so that they can see what I found. It doesn't matter if I can open and view an ahnentafel in FTM 2006, because they live in a different state and cannot see what is on my computer.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Workout warrior Chris Wong fighting cancer with help of new drug

Chris Wong is a workout warrior.

So when he developed pain in his lower back and left leg early in 2009 he assumed he?d pulled a muscle or pinched a nerve. But the pain kept getting worse.

?I was moaning with pain in the evenings and had great difficulty just getting around,? Wong, now 46, wrote in an account of his battle with what turned out to be anaplastic large cell lymphoma, a very aggressive form of cancer. He got that diagnosis after he finally went to the Baptist Medical Center emergency room on Memorial Day 2009.

By then, the cancer, which had progressed over the course of three months to stage-4, had begun to eat into his skeletal structure. His left femur had deteriorated so severely that he had to undergo surgery to have a titanium rod inserted into the bone.

While Wong was recovering from the surgery, he was visited by oncologist Augusto Villegas who told Wong his cancer was treatable but had a high degree of recurrence.

?It was crushing news,? Wong wrote.

In the next two years, Villegas would treat Wong with two rounds of chemotherapy. The first round of chemotherapy put the cancer in remission in October 2009. Wong then underwent a transplant of some of his own stem cells, which had been harvested and stored, at Shands at the University of Florida.

But in February 2011, following the surgical removal of bumps on his head that Wong had initially thought was acne, a biopsy revealed the lymphoma had returned.

?To have the cancer on my skin caught me completely by surprise,? Wong wrote. ?I was pretty shook-up by this devastating news, but received comfort from my family and friends.?

That was treated with radiation. But after Wong continued to lose weight and suffer chest pain, Villegas ordered a bone scan in early June.

The scan found that the cancer had begun to eat into Wong?s rib and pelvis bones. Starting in mid-June, he checked into Baptist Medical Center every four weeks for five days of inpatient chemotherapy treatments.

A PET scan in late July seemed to indicate the cancer was again in remission.

But Villegas was concerned that the lymphoma might return again. ?Typically, it?s harder to cure non-Hodgkins lymphoma after relapse,? he said. ?Chris is a young guy, healthy as a horse. We needed to do something.?

That something, Villegas thought, might be a new drug just approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Adcetris, unlike most other forms of chemotherapy, targets only the cancer cells while leaving the healthy cells unharmed, Villegas said.

Villegas, who practices with Cancer Specialists of North Florida, called Adcetris ?a smarter way to treat cancer? and said it was designed specifically to be used on patients with anaplastic lymphoma after they have relapsed.

?This drug has a very, very specific niche,? he said.

?I was so relieved to have an alternate treatment approach,? Wong wrote. ?This was much better than dosing my whole body with chemo treatments for 4-5 days.?

In early October of last year, Wong began going to Villegas?s office every three or four weeks for an infusion of Adcetris. Last Nov. 19, a PET-CT scan showed him cancer free.

Then in December, he went to Shands at the University of Florida where he received a stem cell transplant from a donor.

He was allowed to resume his work as an IT coordinator for a health care company in May, working from home. Then in July, he was allowed to return to his office. On his last scan, in August, Wong remained cancer-free.

?I?m enjoying life,? the father of four said during an interview. ?It?s a lot to go through. But it gives you a better appreciation of life.?

And he?s still a workout warrior.

Pelvic Floor 101

If I were to ask a room full of people ?what are kegal exercises?? I?m sure it would be all the women?s hands that would shoot up.

For those of you who don?t know, kegals are pelvic floor exercises that women are advised to do during their pregnancy to help avoid embarrassing ?leaks?.

Embarrassing leaks are not confined to women who have had children, cosmetic companies spend a lot of money targeting women in general, which sweeps under the table the fact that men can suffer too. So although this is a pregnancy focussed health and fitness blog the below holistic approach could apply to anyone.

The pelvic floor (or pelvic diaphragm) consists of muscle and tissue that covers the area below your hips, keeping lots of your important bits separate. It also has important functions during childbirth helping the fetus navigate through the pelvic girdle i.e. helping contain the baby until the head is ready to engage.

So what right?

Well when I first had my first few mid-wife appointments I was told I should be doing my kegals if I wanted to say fit ?down there?. This never seemed right to me and I never bothered doing them. I felt that I would be much better served by performing squats regularly and working on posture and body awareness.

Whilst pregnant I had no problems with those embarrassing leaks I was warned about and have no issues presently so for me, ?I am glad I did not waste time with kegals.

I have since read a great article which further confirms my doubts regarding kegals.

According to recent research published by Rehab Management, pelvic floor incontinence has been linked to postural alignment and weak glutes. Interestingly the act of squeezing and releasing the pelvic floor (the simplest way to explain kegals) adds to the tightness of the muscle and neglects the length. Over time you tighten the muscle and by doing this reduce optimal length-tension relationship. When the pelvic floor is not functioning adequately the result is an inability to control your urge to ?go? or the frequency with which you need to do so, and at worse cause infection.

From a training perspective a shortened pelvic floor are key factors in stress incontinence (imagine sneezing or laughing and a bit of wee coming out! That?s stress incontinence) and is a worry when added intra-abdominal pressure is increased. I was starting to put together a picture of someone who cannot control their lower back, bad posture and a weak bottom, frantically doing their kegals without success.

The research continued to highlight a holistic approach to pelvic floor health looking closely at posture and core strength rather than isolating the muscle itself. As a CrossFitter this makes perfect sense as to we get strong by working the whole body as one unit.

Where does this leave me with kegals? In a healthy active pregnant lady I wouldn?t prescribe them.

I would look at the bigger picture, addressing posture and body awareness to the developing changes in her body. I would recommend squats regularly both with weighted resistance and without. My response is simply squats over kegals ? they provide a much better and more natural way for the pelvic floor to do its job the way nature intended.

Please be aware that past 37 weeks pregnant deep squats are not advised as they can cause an early rupture of the membranes (early sign of labour).

'Breaking Bad' star will drive 'Need for Speed' movie?

"Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul is going from one kind of speed ... to another.

Paul, who has won two Emmy Awards for his portrayal of methamphetamine dealer?Jess Pinkman?in the hit TV show, will be getting behind the wheel for a movie based on the "Need for Speed" racing game franchise, Electronic Arts?announced Monday.

Paul has been cast to play the lead in the film, which will be produced by?DreamWorks Studios and directed by?Scott Waugh ("Act of Valor").

According to Electronic Arts, publisher of the game franchise, the movie?adaptation will be "a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the '70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise."

The film adaptation will not be based on a specific game, but instead will be based on the overall series.

The "Need for Speed" franchise?got its start when?the first racing?game launched back in 1994. The series has since?seen more than a dozen installments and?has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide, generating?an?estimated $4 billion in revenue, according to EA.?The latest game??? ?Need for Speed Most Wanted????launches Oct. 30.

"Need for Speed is one of the most action-packed entertainment experiences you can find," said Patrick Soderlund, Electronic Arts executive vice president. "Like the game series itself, the cast for the movie needs to be edgy and cool. Aaron Paul is a rising star???a great choice for the film lead."

Paul, who has appeared in the HBO series?"Big Love" as well as films like "Smashed" and "Mission Impossible III,"?has won two?Emmy Awards?for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama" for his work in "Breaking Bad."

According to Electronic Arts,?production on the "Need for Speed" film is scheduled to start early next year with a theatrical release planned for?February, 2014.

Meteorite delivers Martian secrets to University of Alberta researcher

A meteorite that landed in the Moroccan desert 14 months ago is providing more information about Mars, the planet where it originated. University of Alberta researcher Chris Herd helped in the study of the Tissint meteorite, in which traces of Mars' unique atmosphere are trapped.

"Our team matched traces of gases found inside the Tissint meteorite with samples of Mars' atmosphere collected in 1976 by Viking, NASA's Mars lander mission," said Herd.

Herd explained that 600 million years ago the meteorite started out as a fairly typical volcanic rock on the surface of Mars when it was launched off the planet by the impact of an asteroid.

"At the instant of that impact with Mars, a shock wave shot through the rock," said Herd. "Cracks and fissures within the rock were sealed instantly by the heat, trapping components of Mars' atmosphere inside, and forming black, glassy spots."

The team estimates that for a period between 700,000 and one million years the rock floated through outer space until July, 2011 when it streaked through Earth's atmosphere landing in Morocco.

This is only the fifth time a Martian meteorite landing was witnessed. Herd says the fact that it was picked up just a few months after landing and was not subjected to weathering or contamination on this planet is the key reason why this meteorite is so important.

The Martian weathering involved water, which means water was present on the surface of Mars within the past few hundred million years. But Herd says this meteorite sample does not carry any evidence the water supported any life forms.

"Because the Martian rock was subject to such intense heat any water borne microbial life forms that may have existed deep within cracks of the rock would have been destroyed," said Herd.

Curiosity, NASA's current Mars Rover mission is moving around the Red Planet searching for more information on the history of Mars.

The team's study makes a return mission to Mars that will bring rocks back to Earth all the more crucial, "Martian rocks delivered to Earth by a space craft would provide the best opportunity to see if life was ever clinging to the surface of Mars."
