Detail of an Old Master oil painting, a close-up of a copper-rich mineral, or the vivid colours of a paua shell? The image is in fact the surface of an alien world: an enhanced-colour image taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's HiRISE camera.

Each colour represents a different type of rock, the mix of minerals churned up by a meteor striking the surface close to the Nili Fossae region. Known as ejecta, these rocks surround an impact crater and give scientists a chance to examine the planet's ancient bedrock.

Sometimes ejecta does not fall back to the surface like these minerals and instead is cast into space, creating meteorites of Martian surface material. One such rock from Mars is the ALH 84001 meteorite, which crashed on Earth and contains formations that famously look like fossilised microbes.

Fructose significantly improved blood sugar control

TORONTO, Ont. June 21, 2012A new study by researchers at St. Michael's Hospital suggests that fructose may not be as bad for us as previously thought and that it may even provide some benefit.

"Over the last decade, there have been connections made between fructose intake and rates of obesity," said Dr. John Sievenpiper, a senior author of the study. "However, this research suggests that the problem is likely one of overconsumption, not fructose."

The study reviewed 18 trials with 209 participants who had Type 1 and 2 diabetes and found fructose significantly improved their blood sugar control. The improvement was equivalent to what can be achieved with an oral antidiabetic drug.

Even more promising, Dr. Sievenpiper said, is that the researchers saw benefit even without adverse effects on body weight, blood pressure, uric acid (gout) or cholesterol.

Fructose, which is naturally found in fruit, vegetables and honey, is a simple sugar that together with glucose forms sucrose, the basis of table sugar. It is also found in high-fructose corn syrup, the most common sweetener in commercially prepared foods.

In all the trials they reviewed, participants were fed diets where fructose was incorporated or sprinkled on to test foods such as cereals or coffee. The diets with fructose had the same amount of calories as the ones without.

"Attention needs to go back where it belongs, which is on the concept of moderation," said Adrian Cozma, the lead author of the paper and a research assistant with Dr. Sievenpiper.

"We're seeing that there may be benefit if fructose wasn't being consumed in such large amounts," Cozma said. "All negative attention on fructose-related harm draws further away from the issue of eating too many calories."

The paper was released today in the July issue of Diabetes Care.

Although the results are encouraging, the authors warn that it's important to be cautious because longer and larger studies are still needed.

Lady Gaga's MRI Checks Out Fine

Mother Monster takes to Twitter to let her dad know she is doing fine after a concert head injury.

A little more than week after Lady Gaga suffered a concussion and some bruises from an onstage collision with a metal set piece on her Born This Way Ball, the singer got some good news: She's doing just fine.

"Went for an MRI," she tweeted on Wednesday (June 20). "No harm from the concussion but it appears my brain is just water and a large floating jellyfish." She then shared just who she got the check-up for, adding a little note to her dad. "@germanottajoe i had them check my noodle," she wrote. "that was your father's day present Il mio babbo!! I thought they were taking me to the zoo. TRICKS."

The injury took place on June 10 while the Mother Monster was in New Zealand when a dancer accidentally hit her with a set piece mid-song. She walked off during "Judas" only to return to the stage after a short break to perform 16 more songs. "I want to apologize," she later told the crowd. "I did hit my head and I think I may have a concussion. But don't you worry, I will finish this show."

Gaga will play several shows in Sydney, including a gig on Wednesday night. She'll play Australia through the remainder of this month before hitting up Europe in July. She has dates slated right through December abroad. She has yet to announce North American dates for her elaborate Born This Way Ball, with a gothic castle serving as the tour's main visual.

In addition to touring through the rest of 2012, Gaga will also release her first fragrance, Fame, in September, which also happens to be the month she will announce the title of her next album, the follow-up to 2011's Born This Way.

The scientists discovered that the protein Bax Inhibitor-1 (BI-1) protects lung cancer cells and promotes tumor growth by regulating autophagy, a complex process initiated under stressful conditions that breaks down a cell's own components to provide nutrients needed for survival. "Cancer cells are remarkably adaptive and depend on a variety of mechanisms to ensure their survival and continued growth when challenged by their environment," says John C. Reed, M.D., Ph.D., professor and CEO of Sanford-Burnham. "By reducing levels of BI-1, it appears we were able to modulate intracellular signals and starve lung cancer cells of the energy needed to carry out one of their most important survival mechanisms, autophagy." The researchers showed that BI-1 appeared to be linked to levels of calcium, which aids in signal transduction.

Suppressing BI-1 reduced calcium levels in the endoplasmic reticulum, the interconnected network of sacs and tubules that manufacture, process and transport a variety of compounds for use inside and outside of cells. Lowering BI-1 levels led to reduced mitochondrial activity, oxygen consumption and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels. ATP is often called the "molecular unit of currency" due to the important role it plays in transporting chemical energy needed for metabolism. The researchers' laboratory findings were confirmed by animal models that showed BI-1 suppression reduced human lung cancer tumor growth.

"These studies are the first to show that BI-1 may play an important survival role in cells under circumstances where oxygen and nutrient deprivation are encountered, such as the conditions that arise in advanced tumors or when cells are stressed by chemotherapy treatments," says Paul B. Fisher, M.Ph., Ph.D., Thelma Newmeyer Corman Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and program co-leader of Cancer Molecular Genetics at VCU Massey Cancer Center, chairman of VCU's Department of Human and Molecular Genetics and director of the VCU Institute of Molecular Medicine. "We are excited by our findings because they uncover a new pathway that may be an effective target for future therapies to treat advanced lung cancer." Next, the scientists hope to apply their findings to screen for potential drugs that can reduce BI-1-mediated protective autophagy in cancer cells.

Greek parties seek coalition deal, bailout revision

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greek political parties meeting on Tuesday said they expected to form a coalition government soon and then seek concessions to the painful austerity measures tied to the international bailout deal keeping the country from bankruptcy.

Conservative New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras, the winner of Sunday's election, has promised to negotiate easier terms for Greece, backed by likely coalition partner Evangelos Venizelos, head of the Socialist PASOK party.

"Greece must and will have a government as soon as possible," Venizelos said after a meeting with Fotis Kouvelis, head of the small Democratic Left party as part of talks to form a cross-party government with New Democracy.

"There is a need to form a national negotiating team that will deal with revision of harsh terms of the bailout deal."

However, hopes that the government may be in place by the end of the day appeared to fade after Kouvelis, whose party opposed the bailout deal in the election campaign, said several points still needed to be negotiated and agreement might take longer.

"There will be a government, but I don't know if it will be formed by tonight. I believe we will have reached an agreement by the end of the week," he told reporters.

Earlier, a senior New Democracy official said he expected that a deal with PASOK would be reached by Tuesday. Samaras, who has three days to form a coalition before his mandate runs out, is due to hold further meetings during the day.

New Democracy and PASOK alternated in power from the fall of military rule in 1974 until last year, when Greece's economic crisis forced the arch rivals to share power in a pro-bailout national unity government.

But PASOK support has plunged this year, leaving it a distant third behind New Democracy and the leftist SYRIZA party, which wants to cancel the austerity measures in the bailout package and negotiate a new "national recovery plan".

There has been a marked shift of tone since the election as leaders of the parties that had previously broadly supported the bailout have talked openly about easing the tough conditions demanded by the European Union and International Monetary Fund.

European partners, notably from the bloc's biggest economy Germany, have held out the prospect of extending some payment deadlines but they have repeatedly insisted that the basic conditions of the deal cannot be renegotiated.

"The new government must stick to its commitments, which the country has agreed on," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a meeting of leaders from the Group of 20 major economic powers.

A senior euro zone official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the terms of the deal were "changeable" and could be "adapted", but there were different opinions in the euro area and in Greece on the scope of such changes.

In a sign that Greeks themselves have taken some confidence from the election, banks reported that some deposits withdrawn in the run-up to the vote appeared to be trickling back.

"We didn't have any deposit outflows yesterday, and we are expecting a similar picture today," said one banker, speaking on condition of anonymity. "The election result helped. On the contrary, we had small inflows of up to 10,000 euros from people who kept cash at home."

New Democracy took a 50-seat bonus under Greek electoral law for coming first, and a New Democracy-PASOK alliance would have 162 seats, a majority in the 300-seat parliament. Adding the Democratic Left would give it 179 seats.

Its victory averted the immediate risk of a Greek exit from the euro zone but a new government still faces the daunting prospect of imposing further austerity cuts on a nation deeply divided over the price for bailout funds.

PASOK has yet to commit formally to supporting Samaras and wants to include SYRIZA in a broad-based unity government of all the parties. Venizelos had said talks must be wrapped up by Tuesday.

With Greece just weeks away from running out of cash and a new government needed to negotiate the next instalment of funds from lenders, Greek political leaders are under heavy pressure to avoid a repeat of the deadlock seen after a first and inconclusive election on May 6.

"Political leaders should be aware of the fact that this government is Greece's last chance to remain in the eurozone," the centre-left daily Ta Nea said in an editorial.

"The Greek people are ready to reward the parties that manage to ease austerity and punish those that raise voices of dissent," it said.

A difficult road lies ahead for Samaras, a U.S.-educated economist who went to college with former Socialist Prime Minister George Papandreou.

He inherits a nation in deep social and economic crisis, with an economy in its fifth year of a recession that has left one in five workers out of a job. A rising number of businesses are closing down, the number of homeless on the streets is growing, and anger at austerity cuts is at boiling point.

Samaras, who broadly accepted the bailout during the campaign, promises to cut taxes as well as raise unemployment benefits and pensions.

The New Democracy official said the new government would aim to accelerate and broaden a privatization program to top up state coffers, but also ask its creditors to spread 11.7 billion euros ($14.7 billion) of further austerity cuts over four years instead of two.

With an emboldened SYRIZA bloc led by former communist student leader Tsipras at the head of a powerful opposition, the new government could face protests soon after taking office. SYRIZA almost doubled its share of the vote since the May election.

For starters, the company's doubling the included RAM from 512MB to 1GB. We asked its founders why it'd make such a change, and were told that the boost in memory would enable "snappier performance" throughout, and ensure that it'll handle "the next versions of Android" when updates become available. Wise move. Contrary to the belief of many, such a decision requires more than a simple tweak on a purchase order; Infinitec will be redesigning the final product to look like the item pictured above, and it's bringing on staff in order to adhere to its original shipment month of October. Golf Course Hopes to Catch Mysterious Cow

BONNER SPRINGS, Kan. ? A manhunt of sorts is underway at a Kansas golf course. The search for a cow has people in Bonner Springs talking.

Golfers at Sunflower Hills Golf Course are searching for a cow who has left behind some unwanted presents.

?We know he has been up here because of where he has been leaving his souvenirs,? said Jeff Johnson, golf pro.

Some describe the cow as black while other say she?s brown.

?Our phantom cow has been on the loose for seven weeks and two days,? Johnson said.

A truck carrying dozens of cattle crashed on I-70 not far from the course in April. The driver of the semi along with dozens of cows died in the accident. This particular cow managed to get away and has made its home at the nearby golf course.

?He showed up on the Saturday after the accident up by the club house, by the ninth green. He was roaming around the green,? Johnson said.

Besides leaving behind unpleasant pies, the suspect is staying clear of the actual greens for one reason or another. People at the course set up a pin with corn, salt lick and water in hopes of capturing the cow. If that doesn?t work, the course hopes to find another way to capture their new pet.

Brandon Bowlin: Rodney King: Death of the Common Man

We waited outside in the back courtyard. It was off of Robertson near Beverly Hills. Some office building. Newsmen and women, cameramen and women, murmured and exchanged stories of the past few days. Blazes, gunfire, chaos, looting. The L.A riots were being digested, reformed, examined, and mythologized right before my very eyes.

I was at KJLH and KJLH Radio was in the middle of it. You can read about it here and listen to clips of those days here. I was sent to this patch of the Westside for a press conference. To be given by a common man.

The doors opened and, flanked by men in different levels of suit/pay grade distinction, Rodney King stepped beside the mics.

They wanted to know what the man whose ass whippin' stood at the center of this had to say. They wanted him to encapsulate the feelings of a people enraged. Or to speak on the complexities of racial boundaries in our society. They wanted him to proclaim or pronounce or inspire or just explain what was going on. As if he had some special insight. As if he had started it all.

But he didn't. The anger released during the Los Angeles uprisings of '92 was a pressure release valve of class animus that had been built up over years in a racially divided city the borders of which included sky-high walls of economic inequities. Key moments along the way ramped up 'hoods all over LA until the people exploded and turned to fight someone or something -- back.

But this wasn't those days. By the time Carl Nelson of KJLH News sent me to record this moment, the uprising had turned into opportunistic looting, violence, and destruction. A riot. People had been hurt... were getting hurt, and no one really knew what to expect when the National Guard posted up.

And so, we waited. For some words from the man who became synonymous with the "set-off." We waited for an explanation. Some deep reflection. Something to assure us that we'd get through this. After a brief intro from one of the nearby suits, King stepped to the mic and humbly searched for a way to express the nature of what he was seeing from inside the storm. He wasn't a torrent of eloquence. He wasn't a loquacious stream of reasoned articulation. He was Every Guy. He struggled and stuttered and then...

"Can we all get along?"

It was heartfelt. I was there... King meant it. It seemed too little. Banal in comparison to the volumes of words written in those days. Some of our greatest minds in this nation had let loose waves -- oceans -- of thoughtful strategies on how to overcome this infinitely complex and multi-tiered moment tied to human emotion, social constructs, and individual conceptions, predispositions, biases, and ambitions.

"Can we all get along?" didn't rise to the occasion of the chaos in the streets. It seemed ridiculously small to cover the now full-frontal ugliness Los Angeles belched out into the world. "Can we all get along?" was a Band-aid trying to bridge a gushing artery bleeding Los Angeles's golden reputation as a beautiful city filled with beautiful people who all got along.

King said it and, within a month, we (myself included) turned it into a national joke.

But the joke was always on us. King was being what we all claimed to be -- real. He was the common, everyday, average, and sometimes below-average man. He was the little guy who became an icon. Who accepted the love he was given and barely hung on to his sanity through celebrity. He was an addict. He didn't speak from a written speech or from some political soapbox. He didn't employ a deep vocabulary. He just asked a question. Something that would never occur to someone carrying a smoldering TV.

On that day, his simple words crept below our arrogant expectations. And today, in this heated and racially-pitted political arena, it still lingers. Past all of the pronouncements and awards and accolades tossed about in the aftermath of a burnt city. Past all of the back-patting and medallions and scrolls and photo-ops. Past the snickering and side-eyeing of King's speech pattern. He posed the question NONE of us have had the courage to face and, really, honestly, answer in the realness that our jokes and books and columns and articles and blogs and voices would claim to speak with:

"Can we all get along?"

Rodney King. Rest in Peace.

The question of whether justice is done depends largely on the perspective of the person who is seeking it. ?Rarely, if ever, do both sides of a dispute embrace the outcome crafted by a third party.

In the case of the players suspended for allegedly participating in, funding, and/or establishing the Saints? alleged bounty program, the fact that one of the two parties will also be resolving Monday?s appeals makes it even harder for the other party to be confident that the outcome will resemble anything remotely close to justice.

Saints safety Roman Harper nevertheless remains hopeful that, eventually, justice will be served. ??I know what really went down in our locker room, and I know the things that got hit on us are nowhere near what they?re supposed to be,? Harper told Alex Cassara of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. ??That?s my only comment on it, but I know due justice will eventually happen.?

It likely won?t happen at 345 Park Avenue on Monday, when Commissioner Roger Goodell begins the process of taking a second look at the player suspensions he already has imposed. ?Though it?s possible that he thumbed the scale the first time around in order to appear open-minded and merciful by reducing the suspensions after further review, the four players believe there should be no suspensions, fines, or any other penalties.

Unfortunately, they likely won?t have a full and fair chance to attempt to establish their innocence on Monday.

?I don?t know any part of our government where you can punish somebody and then not say what you?re punishing them for or what you?ve got against them,? Harper said, after being informed of the evidence that the league plans to use. ??I just don?t know anywhere in America where that?s justice.?

The league will call it justice, because for the NFL justice consists of being the ultimate authority on all matters relating directly or indirectly to its business. ?True justice entails a neutral, objective party getting to the truth, especially where as in this case the truth is hotly contested.

As to Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, Saints defensive end Will Smith, Packers defensive end Anthony Hargrove, and Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, something they regard to be justice likely will have to come in some other setting. ?In a controversy that entails plenty of questions and ambiguities (and precious few answers from the league), the only thing that appears certain at this point is that the players certainly won?t have a full and fair chance to prove that their version of the events is the correct one on Monday.
