Google Releases Full Report of FCC Investigation Into Street View Probe, Finds That Senior Staff Knew

Earlier today Google released the full report of the FCC's investigation into the collection of? "payload data" from open Wi-Fi networks -- aka passwords, email and search history from open networks -- that its fleet of Street View cars obtained between 2008 and April 2010. An earlier and heavily redacted version of the report was released on April 15 but today's version only redacted the names of individuals. Though the report found no violation of any wrong doing by the company, the FCC did fine Google $25,000 for obstructing the investigation, which was presumably the outcome of Google refusing to show the FCC what the data being collected entailed because it might have shown that the company broke privacy and wiretapping laws. Google says any obstruction was result of the FCC dragging out the investigation. Interestingly enough, the report did reveal that the data harvesting was not the act of a rogue engineer and that said engineer notified the Street View team of what was going on. (Wait. What? Google knew this was going on! It gets even better.)

Spanning Stats Has Scanned 25,000+ Google Drives

Spanning, which already offers a backup service for Google Apps, is now riding the coattails of Google Drive. Two days after the Drive announcement, Spanning released a new, free tool called Spanning Stats that helps users understand what's in their Google Drive. The company says its report gives you data including the percentage documents in your Google Drive by type, the 10 newest and oldest files, how much of the total storage quota you're using by file type, the 10 biggest files, and the 10 users using the most storage space.

Pop star and manager Scooter Braun were awarded the Disruptive Innovation Award for challenging industry's traditional gatekeepers.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> and his manager Scooter Braun were at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday (April 27) to accept the <a href="/news/articles/1682522/justin-bieber-one-direction-recording.jhtml">2012 Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Award</a> for disrupting "the traditional gatekeepers of the music industry." </P><P> </P><P>Sporting a varsity jacket when he took the stage, the 18-year-old noted that a lot of what he does is a reflection of his relationship with his fans. "I don't think that I would be here without the Internet. " Bieber said. "So she ignored him, and he started calling all of the places where he saw me sing in my videos. ... It was some really creepy stuff. He finally found my great aunt, who I had never met before, to try and get in contact with me." </P><P> </P><P>Of those early days, Braun joked, "Either I was going to be the guy who watches videos of a young boy on the Internet and gets arrested, or I was going to sign him." </P><P> </P><P>The award seems fitting, given how much Bieber's rise to fame has changed the way talent can be discovered via the internet, and can use technology to spread the word. Sony Xperia U gets torn to pieces, FCC destroys something beautiful

There's not much we don't already know about Sony's Xperia U (formerly the Kumquat), the entry-level Gingerbread handset for the company's revamped mobile offerings. Fortunately, those brave boys down in the FCC's underground bunker decided to dissect the handset and delve into its internals, where we can still see some of that Ericsson branding -- presumably it doesn't see any harm in using up some of its old parts if they're hidden from view. Old-timey livery issues aside, the appearance of the handset bodes that all is on schedule for arrival in the second quarter of the year.

IBM Acquires Enterprise Search Software Company Vivisimo To Boost Big Data Analytics

On the heels of acquiring sales data analytics company Varicent last week, Big Blue is making another buy in the data space today? Vivisimo. Financial terms were not disclosed. Vivisimo, which has raised $6 million in funding, launched as a spin-off from Carnegie Mellon and applies clustering technology to enterprise search. Vivisimo provides enterprises with search software that helps organizations access and analyze big data across the enterprise. Vivisimo products are available for standalone search applications or as OEM versions embedded within partner applications and solutions. The software automates the discovery of data and helps employees navigate it with a single view across the enterprise.

Panasonic Eluga now available unlocked in Europe, yours for ?369 or ?460

Wouldn't ya know it, but Panasonic was spot on with its announcement of the Eluga smartphone's European arrival this month. The elegant, waterproof handset is now available unlocked from Expansys, where it retails for £369 and approximately €460, with slight variations among countries. While the phone supports quadband GSM, its UMTS / HSPA connectivity is limited to the 2100MHz and 900MHz bands, which makes it less than ideal for North American use -- though, if you really want one, it seems safe to peg this one in the $600 territory.

Similarly available through NTT DoCoMo as the P-04D, we first managed to get a hands-on with the Eluga at Mobile World Congress. For those in need of a quick refresh, the phone features a TI OMAP 4430 SoC with a dual-core 1GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage, a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, an 8 megapixel rear camera and a rather paltry 1,150mAh battery. The Eluga includes a heavily-skinned version of Android 2.3.5, although an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich has been pegged for release this summer. The phone represents Panasonic's return to the smartphone arena, and while it's a bit behind the curve, it's no doubt a fine starting point.

Google's changing its search algorithm to punish sites that emphasize search-engine optimization over quality. Mountain View's data centers will exclude sites that offer no useful content, have articles written in keyword-sprinkled gibberish or only link to sites within a cluster. If the computers find it, the site's pagerank will be demoted, with the company expecting to affect around three percent of all English language queries when it goes live later this week. The company isn't providing more details (lest it help those trying to game the system), so just get all of those gratuitous Justin Bieber references out of your system before Friday, okay?
