CHANGE MANAGER - Business - EzineMark
CHANGE MANAGERS
In both proactive and reactive responses to change and in every model of change, one element remains the same: the need for change managers. There are different types of change managers and their roles encompass a variety of duties. Managers may have responsibility for change that is not ever formally dictated or outlined, or a person or group may be specifically chosen to enact or facilitate change. Described below are two formal ways in which change managers can be identified: transition management teams and change agents. Some responsibilities of change managers are then described.
TRANSITION MANAGEMENT TEAMS.
In some organizations that are experiencing change, a specific group of managers is chosen to coordinate change through-out an organization.
This transition management team typically consists of eight to twelve people whose full-time responsibilities are to manage and facilitate the change process in the organization. Transition management teams are responsible not only for the structural and procedural changes that occur, but also for managing emotions and resistance to change. These teams typically report to the chief executive officer of the company on a regular basis.Transition management teams do the day-to-day work involved in change management, and they are not simply another layer of management between top management and line employees. Furthermore, they are not the planning committee; these teams do not develop the plans for the change, they only facilitate the change that is being enacted. Neither are they responsible for determining when and where change is needed, or how it will be brought about. Instead, they manage changes that have been identified and implemented by upper management. Finally, these teams are not permanent. They exist only while the organization is in flux, and they are dissolved once the company has successfully changed.
CHANGE AGENTS.
A change agent is one person who is formally in charge of guiding a change effort. The change agent is typically a part of organizational development, which is a set of planned change interventions intended to improve a company's long-term performance and survival. A change agent may be appointed from within the ranks of current company managers, or the agent may be an outside consultant who is brought in during the period of change. Unlike the transition management team, which only facilitates a change that has been identified and planned by others, the change agent is involved in all steps of organizational change. The agent helps to clarify problems, gather relevant information, assist managers in creating a plan, evaluate the plan's effectiveness, and implement the plan. After change has been successfully enacted, the change agent either returns to his or her normal duties (if this person is from within the organization), or ends his or her work with the company (if this person is a consultant).
There are advantages and disadvantages to choosing either an organizational member or an outside consultant to be a change agent. Outside consultants can be more costly and there is a greater risk for trade secrets to be leaked. Additionally, the consultant is unlikely to have the knowledge of the organization that an employee has, nor is this person likely to be trusted by others in the organization, as they would trust one of their own organizational members. However, consultants do have a more unbiased view of the organization and its problems. They may also bring more innovative or creative ideas to the company. Finally, they may be used as a scapegoat when change is implemented. That is, the negative emotions of organizational members may be directed towards the outsider rather than at the company's management, which may make for a smoother transition during the change process.

Mexico: 2 kids, woman killed in Saint Death ritual
HERMOSILLO, Mexico (AP) ? Prosecutors in the Mexican border state of Sonora say eight people have been arrested for allegedly killing two 10-year-old boys and a 55-year-old woman in a ritual sacrifice to the cult of La Santa Muerte, or Saint Death.
State prosecutors spokesman Jose Larrinaga says the victims' blood was poured around an altar to the saint, depicted as a skeleton holding a scythe and clothed in flowing robes.
The cult is popular among drug traffickers and criminals.
Larrinaga said Friday that some of the killers appear to relatives of the victims, but he did not specify the relationship.
The arrests were made Thursday, after tests revealed blood traces spread 30 square meters (yards) around the altar.

BlackBerry maker to focus on business customers

TORONTO (AP) ? Struggling BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. said Thursday that it plans to return its focus to its corporate customers after failing to compete with flashier, consumer-oriented phones such as Apple's iPhone and models that run Google's Android software.
The shift in strategy came with a management shakeup that includes longtime executive Jim Balsillie leaving the board and severing ties with a company he helped build and later see decline.
RIM said it will focus its consumer efforts on targeted offerings that tap the company's strengths. That includes devices that employees will want to buy on their own and bring to the corporate environment. The company was exploring partnerships and other opportunities for consumer products that aren't deemed central. Those products could include software and features that are then incorporated into RIM's own offerings.
"We can't do everything ourselves, but we can do what we're good at," RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said.
RIM has had limited success trying to enter consumer markets in recent years, particularly with high-end devices that sport touch screens popular with consumers.
Heins said a turnaround required "substantial change."
"We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we tried to be everybody's darling and all things to all people," Heins said. "Therefore, we plan to build on our strength."
Heins, who joined RIM four years ago and was most recently its chief operating officer, replaced co-CEOs Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis in January after the company lost tens of billions in market value. Lazaridis founded the company, and Balsillie had joined in its early years.
RIM said Thursday that Balsillie has resigned from its board after 20 years with the company. David Yach, chief technology officer for software, and Jim Rowan, chief operating officer for global operations, also are leaving.
The company said it was undergoing a comprehensive strategic review. Heins said he was open to selling the company, but "it is not the main direction we are pursuing right now."
The Canadian company has long dominated the corporate smartphone market. Its BlackBerrys are known for their security and reliability as email devices. President Barack Obama even refused to part with his BlackBerry after he took office.
RIM has sought to expand its appeal to consumers, but it has had trouble because the phones aren't perceived to be as sexy as its chief competitors. RIM has been counting on improvements with its forthcoming BlackBerry 10 system, but that has faced multiple delays. BlackBerrys also lag iPhones or Android phones when it comes to running third-party applications. Touch-screen models that lack physical keyboards have largely flopped.
For that reason, BlackBerrys are even losing ground in the business world, as employees demand iPhones or Android devices over BlackBerrys.
Apple sold 37 million iPhones in the last three months of 2011 ? more than what RIM shipped in the past three quarters combined. RIM shipped 11.1 million BlackBerrys in the latest quarter, which ended March 3.
RIM also bombed in its efforts to produce a tablet computer to compete with Apple's iPad. Among other things, the PlayBook received negative reviews because it launched without an email program and the popular messaging service BlackBerry Messenger. In December, the tablets that originally cost $500 were selling for $200, below the cost of making them.
BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis said it's a positive development that RIM is going to focus on its corporate clients and lower-end consumers.
"They are conceding the high-end consumer market with all these services that are wrapped around the platform," Gillis said. "At least there's some reality here. Are they going to compete against iTunes? No way."
Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies & Co. in New York, said RIM should have recognized that it is niche player and lost the battle with Apple three years ago. Misek said the company should have looked at partnering with other companies last year rather than now.
When he took the CEO job in January, Heins said a drastic change in strategy was not needed. He said Thursday that he changed his mind after conducting his "own reality check on where the entire company really is."
RIM announced the changes as it announced quarterly results that fell short of Wall Street expectations.
Net loss was $125 million, or 24 cents a share, in the fiscal fourth quarter. This compares with $934 million, or $1.78 per share, a year ago.
After excluding one-time items, adjusted income was 80 cents per share, a penny short of expectations from analysts polled by FactSet.
Revenue fell 25 percent to $4.2 billion from $5.6 billion. Analysts were expecting $4.5 billion.
For the full fiscal year, RIM earned $1.2 billion, or $2.22 a share, on revenue of $18.4 billion. That compares with net income of $3.4 billion, or $6.34 a share, on revenue of $19.9 billion in fiscal 2011.
In extended trading after the results came out, RIM shares fell 33 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $13.40. During the regular session, the stock increased 6 cents to close at $13.73.

North Sea gas leak exclusion zone
The BBC understands workers were told 'this is not a drill', before being evacuated
Exclusion zones have been put in place around the Elgin platform in the North Sea, which has been suffering a serious gas leak since Sunday.
Coastguards said shipping was being ordered to keep at least two miles away and there was a three-mile exclusion zone for aircraft.
A cloud of gas was reported to be surrounding the platform, which is located 150 miles (240km) off Aberdeen.
Workers from a second platform and drilling rig have been removed.
Shell has moved 120 non-essential staff from the Shearwater platform and Hans Deul drilling rig, about four miles from the Elgin, because of the drifting gas.
The oil giant said the move was a "precautionary measure".
Emergency planTotal, which operates the Elgin platform, said the situation was stable but it had not yet been able to identify the source of the leak.
A sheen of between two and 23 tonnes of gas condensate, and measuring six nautical miles in length, has been reported on the water nearby, and Total has activated its Oil Pollution Emergency Plan.
Jake Molloy, of the RMT union which represents offshore workers, said many had been watching the Old Firm game between Rangers and Celtic when the alarm was raised on Sunday afternoon.
He said: "Just as it finished a PA announcement went out to say everyone was to go to the muster point and this was not a drill.
"The stand-by vessel had identified the sea boiling, as it were, below the installation - suggesting there was gas coming up there and there was some kind of vapour cloud sitting on the surface of the sea."
Continue reading the main storyEnd Quote Dr Simon Boxall OceanographerI am guessing they are going to tackle it from beneath the surface to start with?
David Hainsworth, health, safety and environment manager for Total E&P UK, told BBC Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme the situation was "stable" and there had been no major change overnight.
He said: "We've been monitoring overnight. There seems to be no evolution in the rate of gas release.
"The area was over-flown twice yesterday by spotter planes to look at the sheen on the sea - that is about the same, at six nautical miles in length."
Mr Hainsworth said all the power was turned off when the platform was evacuated to minimise the risk of igniting an explosion.
He added: "Clearly there is a risk of ignition and a fire.
"We've taken away all the usual sources of ignition such as electrical power but yes there is a possibility.
"We believe it is low but you never say never."
Mr Hainsworth said they were evaluating the options for dealing with the leak.
Options include drilling a relief well - a process which could take many weeks.
Another possibility could be to carry out a "dynamic kill" - pumping heavy mud into the well to suppress the flow of gas.
Mr Hainsworth said there was a possibility that the leak could stop of its own accord.
He said: "I would say the best case scenario is that the gas is not very productive from this area and that it dies off over the coming days and weeks."
Very flammableDr Simon Boxall, an oceanographer at Southampton University, told BBC Scotland that this was not a deepwater drilling rig and platform but it was unusual in that they were drilling down 5km (3.1 miles) into the sea bed.
He said: "It is a very deep well. The gas they are bringing up is what we call sour gas.
"That gas has a high proportion of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide and that makes it very flammable and quite poisonous.
"So the big problem they have got is dealing with a very combustible gas - unlike Deepwater Horizon where we were dealing with crude oil which ironically is very difficult to light sometimes."
Further complicationsDr Boxall said it would be tricky to get close to the leak.
"I am guessing they are going to tackle it from beneath the surface to start with," he said.
"On the one hand the Total spokesman said there was no gas bubbling through the sea and yet the observer talked about the sea boiling.
"It seems unusual that it is not bubbling through the sea and that is going to add further complications of hydrogen sulfide going into the water - certainly causing widespread poisoning in the vicinity of the rig."
Dr Boxall said it was a very focused and localised issue but one which would be very difficult to tackle.
All 238 workers were removed from the Elgin installation and the nearby Rowan Viking drilling rig by helicopter on Sunday.
Shell confirmed on Monday evening it was flying non-essential personnel back to Aberdeen from its Shearwater platform and the nearby Hans Deul drilling rig.
The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has been monitoring the situation and said there was no indication of a risk of significant pollution to the environment.

Researchers Ferret Out Reasons For Runner's High

Dogs and humans release natural painkillers after running, but ordinarily sedentary ferrets that run do not. The chemical compounds may be an adaptation to reward the necessary behavior in running species. Christopher Intagliata reports.

You've probably had the feeling. Your running shoes are pounding the pavement?then suddenly your pain fades away, and you're feeling euphoric. The runner's high. But that biological perk may be limited to mammals that evolved for endurance exercise?like us. So says a study in the Journal of Experimental Biology. [David A. Raichlen et al, Wired to run: exercise-induced endocannabinoid signaling in humans and cursorial mammals with implications for the ?runner?s high?]
Researchers had humans and dogs?both natural-born runners?jog a half hour on a treadmill. Then they sampled their blood for endocannabinoids, some of the compounds thought to trigger the runner's high. As expected, humans and dogs had much higher levels after the run. But when ferrets?a sedentary species?took the same 30-minute trot, they had no spike in those feel-good molecules.
The authors say that's because long-distance running could have helped our hunter-gatherer ancestors find more food?thus increasing their reproductive success. And they speculate that natural selection may have linked up a feel-good reward to that beneficial behavior. These days of course, this ancient trait won't help us find extra calories?but it may encourage us to run 'em off.

Timezone: central
What you RP: I mostly RP a plethera of original characters. I prefer to RP originals as I can develop them myself. However, I will delve into a few fandoms:
Claymore (Teresa, Clare, or Jeane)
Teen Titans (Starfire) (Don't judge me, this was my fave show as a kid xD)
As far as original settings, I do it all. Vampires, werewolves, aliens, werewolf aliens, post-apocalypse, ghosts, humans, shifters, whaaaatever you could possibly think of, if it sounds fun, I will do it.
Characters you RP: I prefer to RP females, but I have very well developed male characters I play as NPCS or sides. Please do not contact me wanting me to play a male as my main.
Characters you?re looking to interact with: I'll be honest and say I'm looking for dominant male characters. I don't want prince charming, or 1-dimensional characters.
Any specific storyline ideas, or general feelings involved with RPing: I have a million plots in my head, but I do require romance in the RP, a development of a relationship between two characters. I want a plot-based rp with detail, and CONFLICT. I love me some conflict. However, I want to CHAT with you OOC and be your friend. If you prefer to be silent and strictly rp, I'm afraid I'm not the girl for you.
Do you smut?: It honestly depends on your definition, and the circumstance. But I am not here looking to RP porn, and any romantic actions have to be built up to in character. My character isn't going to throw themselves at your face two posts in. xD
Is there anything else you would like to add?: I LOVE YOU.

AP Enterprise: FAMU emails detail hazing warnings
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? The father of a freshman in Florida A&M University's famed marching band emailed the school's president in 2007 after getting a series of panic-stricken phone calls. The son never described exactly what was happening, but he made it clear he feared getting beaten.
"I feel that my son's future could be in jeopardy," Donovan Crosby wrote to James Ammons in the email, which is part of public records obtained jointly by The Associated Press and Tallahassee Democrat.
Hundreds of pages of records show years of repeated warnings about brutal hazing passed without any serious response from the school's leadership until last November's beating death of drum major Robert Champion.
A staff member replied to the email, so Crosby called the next day to talk to Ammons directly. Crosby said at first the president reassured him, then repeated the standard line that the school doesn't condone hazing.
Crosby said his son left FAMU after two years and has since struggled with personal problems. He only recently re-enrolled at another college in Florida.
"It was the worst decision in his life to go to FAMU," Crosby said.
Police files show that since 2007 nearly two dozen incidents involving the band, fraternities and other student groups have been investigated. But it wasn't until Champion's death that the band director was initially fired, the band was suspended, student clubs were halted from recruiting new members and an anti-hazing task force was assembled.
Crosby and numerous other parents over the last several years wrote or called university administrators, band officials or police begging someone at FAMU to keep their son or daughter safe.
"After 1 month at FAMU he is broken, indecisive, sad, confused and he wants to come home," parent Cheryl Walker emailed Ammons. " ... My son will not quit school, you will not break him, I will see to that but FAMU has lost a hell of a young man and after this semester he will not be back. I pray that GOD will give the administration wisdom and courage to stand up against the stupid idiotic practices that go on (at) this FAMU campus."
Emails show that the hazing was clearly known as a problem to various school officials.
William Hudson, a FAMU administrator, wrote to then-vice president for student affairs Roland Gaines in 2009 and asked "Do you think we can have the police talk to the band and put the fear of GOD in them? Even ride by the field during practice?"
Gaines replied that the school's main attorney "met with the band and placed the fear of his office in them. He does this every year. A lot of this alleged activity may not be occurring during the organized practices; but again, it may."
The school held mandatory sessions with students each fall, warning them that hazing is a felony in Florida and requiring students to sign a form acknowledging the consequences.
The warnings appeared to do little to change the culture. Many police investigations into hazing went nowhere because students stonewalled and refused to cooperate. Crosby's own son refused to talk to police. Even sometimes when arrests were made, the charges would eventually get dropped.
One band member told a police investigator in 2006 that "I don't want to prosecute because I know that it will get worse. This is what I want to do so it doesn't matter because I can defend myself."
Police investigations into hazing were so commonplace that FAMU police even had a "band hazing questionnaire" that it submitted to students. And it appears that hazing wasn't just limited to current band members. Julian White ? band director at the time of Champion's death ? wrote an email to band alumni asking them to refrain from hazing current students.
Champion's death was the latest chapter of violent hazing involving the Marching 100. In 1998, Ivery Luckey, a clarinet player from Ocala was hospitalized with kidney damage after being paddled in the initiation to join a group known as "The Clones." Three years later, band member Marcus Parker was hospitalized with kidney damage after being paddled.
A few weeks before Champion's death, band member Bria Hunter was hospitalized with a broken leg and blood clots in what authorities say was another act of hazing. Three band members have been charged. In September, more aspiring "Clones" members were punched and paddled, leading to charges in January against four band members.
Even after those serious incidents, the emails and records show, the band hazing continued and the school couldn't ? or wouldn't ? stop it. At the same time, some professors insisted that hazing had been eradicated.
Music professor Lindsay Sarjeant boasted to a professor at the University of Southern California in the fall of 2010 that "I'm happy to tell you that we were very successful in completely eradicating hazing from the Florida A&M University Band. It was hard and took several years to change the mind set of the non significance of hazing in any form ... At FAMU, the consequences are too severe to engage in any form of hazing, mental and physical."
Ammons and other FAMU officials refused to answer questions for this story, citing the advice of attorneys as the university awaits the outcome of ongoing investigations. The panel that oversees the state university system has also launched its own investigation The Board of Governors wants to know whether FAMU officials ignored past warnings about hazing.
Champion's death remains under investigation by state and Orange County law-enforcement authorities and no arrests have been made.
The 26-year-old died from a shock caused by severe bleeding following a hazing ritual that occurred on a bus outside an Orlando hotel where the band was staying. It came hours after Florida A&M's annual football game against archrival Bethune-Cookman, which features a halftime Battle of the Bands.
Ammons fired band director White after Champion's death. White hired an attorney and fired back, producing thick stacks of letters that showed he routinely suspended band members and that he forwarded this letters to top officials. His dismissal was put on hold at the urging of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is investigating Champion's death along with Orange County authorities.
School officials contend that they did not receive any recent letters until White was initially dismissed by the school. Public records turned over by the university so far have not included any correspondence from top administrators responding to White in recent years.
A batch of emails, however, does show that on Nov. 14 White forwarded to police and top administrators ? including Ammons ? a report that discussed hazing allegations involving members of the trombone section. The report details how band members were suspended from performing in a Veterans Day parade and how they argued with an assistant professor contending that they had done nothing wrong.
Some parents, such as Cheryl Walker back in 2009, did put part of the blame on White. She told administrators that he had not responded to her text message for help. Police files show that in 2002 an investigator for FAMU police chided White, contending he had "hampered" an investigation because he delayed before he reported an incident.
White, in his own words, expressed frustration about hazing after he was forced to suspend band members last November.
"Don't want a Joe Paterno Penn State problem at FAMU," White wrote in a Nov. 11 email to a friend who was a band director at a Panhandle high school.
Eight days later Robert Champion would be dead.

Forget hoops, NFL has March Madness

March Madness is all about the NFL this year.
From Peyton Manning in Denver to Tim Tebow in New York.
From Sean Payton getting suspended for New Orleans' bounty system to Saints players awaiting possible punishment for participating in it.
Not to mention the other big free agent signings. How did Mario Williams wind up in Buffalo? Answer: There's 100 million reasons.
How about Calvin Johnson's $132 million deal through 2019 with the Lions, merely the richest contract in NFL history, with Megatron getting $60 million guaranteed?
No matter what happens in the NCAA basketball tournament, with the Final Four in the Big Easy of all places, it can't top what the NFL has produced in March.
And that's with the draft, usually the focal point of the offseason, still a month away.
It has become impossible to escape NFL headlines pretty much since the Giants beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl ? that was Feb. 5. The next meaningful pro football game is more than five months away.
The past two weeks, in particular, have been off the charts for NFL interest.
"Fans love it and they crave it," said Rich Gannon, the 2002 NFL Most Valuable Player and now a host on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "They don't want an offseason and there hasn't really been one, from the Super Bowl and the one-month buildup to the combine and free agency, and then to everything lately.
"I took my car in for service and three guys there, all they were saying was what about the Saints? And then the Tebow stuff; I am not surprised by that at all. And Peyton in Denver."
In addition to the front-page news, there have been some offseason moves that would be a big deal ? in any other year.
Example A: A massive trade of picks between Washington and St. Louis already has spiced up the draft, with the Redskins in position to land Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III (if Indy doesn't take him at No. 1 instead of Andrew Luck).
Example B: The same Redskins and their division-rival Cowboys, each get dinged for huge salary cap reductions by the league.
Rarely does anything in sports push The Big Dance off center stage. But all the NFL action has done just that.
No reason to think it will stop now, with penalties for Saints defensive players sure to come, if not by the end of this unpredictable month then quickly in April.
By then, the Senate Judiciary Committee could be holding a hearing about the bounties that led to Payton being suspended for the 2012 season; former assistant Gregg Williams, who ran the program and now is defensive coordinator in St. Louis, getting barred indefinitely; New Orleans general manager Mickey Loomis suspended for eight games and Saints assistant Joe Vitt for six games; and the team stripped of two second-round draft picks and fined $500,000.
"Let's be real basic about it here," said Sen. Dick Durbin, who is calling the bounty hearing. "If this activity were taking place off of a sporting field, away from a court, nobody would have a second thought (about whether it's wrong). 'You mean, someone paid you to go out and hurt someone?'
"It goes way beyond the rules of any sporting contest, at least team contest, to intentionally inflict harm on another person for a financial reward."
It does grab attention; scandals always do. So two of the NFL's transcendent quarterbacks came along to rescue the league's image a bit: Manning and Tebow.
Anytime a four-time MVP changes addresses, it's huge news. When that player never missed a start in 13 seasons before sitting out an entire year after four neck surgeries, interest is piqued a mile high.
"It is a huge plus to have a Peyton Manning on your roster," Broncos boss John Elway said upon signing Manning to a five-year contract worth $96 million if fulfilled.
And a huge plus to have him in the league to deflect some attention from the bad vibes surrounding the Saints.
Ditto for Tebow, whose job disappeared in Denver when Manning joined the Broncos. Where else for him to land but with the Jets, who seem determined to win the back pages of the New York tabloids while their co-inhabitants at the Meadowlands, the Giants, win Super Bowls.
The Jets' swift action ? well, swift until there was an eight-hour delay as the Jets discovered a clause in Tebow's contract that would have cost them $5 million before it was renegotiated ? shifted the glare away from the Saints, as well.
In the middle of all this, the Cowboys had $10 million of salary cap space stripped and the Redskins lost a whopping $36 million, spread over this year and next. Yet both have found ways to spend enough on free agents to fill some holes.
What chaos could be ahead? Plenty.
? New Orleans star quarterback Drew Brees has yet to reach agreement on a new contract and, given the Saints' precarious situation, imagine how ugly things might get if he ignores the franchise tag the team plunked on him and stays away from offseason workouts.
? With a rookie wage scale limiting financial investments, more blockbuster draft trades could happen. As it is, the Redskins mortgaged much of their future to move up four spots to get RG III. Yet, after his sensational pro day at Baylor, there's thought Griffin has become a challenger to Stanford's Luck as the top overall pick, owned by Indianapolis.
? Still out there ready to grab attention, if not many passes, is Terrell Owens. So might be Chad Ochocinco if the Patriots, as expected, release him. And Randy Moss, who didn't even play in the NFL in 2011 and was no factor the previous year, landed in San Francisco.
? Tebow vs. Mark Sanchez. Just wait until the incumbent stumbles, even momentarily, and the Big Apple is rocked by screams from Tebow's loyal legions.
? New jersey designs by Nike resemble the Oregon Ducks' varied uniforms, causing a surge to ? or away from ? the merchandise shelves.
At least there are no labor battles to be waged for 4? months by America's richest sports league and its players. Last year at this time, we were in the middle of the lockout. No one knew if the 2011 season would even happen.
"I think the NFL is in great shape," Manning said, "with some great owners, great coaches and great people in leadership."
Don't forget plenty of newsmakers.

Italy's Cinque Terre readies for spring tourists

Tom Wallace
Floodwaters rush into Vernazza's harbor after an intense rainstorm ripped through the Cinque Terre region of Italy on Oct. 25, 2011. Monterosso, another Cinque Terre town, also was devastated.
By Tanya Mohn, msnbc.com contributor
For the residents of the Cinque Terre, a region of five quaint coastal villages nestled in cliffs overlooking the Ligurian Sea on Italy?s northwestern coast, the arrival of spring may be especially sweet this year.
Last fall, torrential rains, massive flooding and mudslides, some more than 13 feet high, devastated the area. Homes, businesses and trails were damaged. In the aftermath of the violent Oct. 25?storm, there was concern about how the storm would impact the tourism season, which typically begins in spring.
But preliminary reports are positive.
The Cinque Terre is ready to receive tourists, according to a representative in the Italian Government Tourist Board in New York, who said that by Easter, the region hopes to have all the paths open. The famous ?Via dell?Amore? (?Love?s path?) trail is open, but others sustained damage and were closed due to safety issues. The Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre, the national park, provides regular trail updates on its website.?
Edward Piegza, president and founder of Classic Journeys, who spoke by phone with his company?s local tour guides as well as business owners in the Cinque Terre before being interviewed by msnbc.com, said many shops and restaurants are open in Monterosso, one of the two towns damaged by the storm. And those that are not ?are working quickly to rebuild by tourist season, the beginning of April,? he said.
Classic Journeys has offered its ?Tuscany and the Cinque Terre Cultural Walking Tour? since 1996.

Classic Journeys
A group of tourists walks to Vernazza in Italy's Cinque Terre region in 2005.
The Cinque Terre is known for distinctive pastel-colored homes, seaside charms, and its network of walking and hiking trails along cliffs, linking the towns and winding though terraced hills of vineyards, and olive and chestnut groves, offering dramatic views and ample opportunities for much needed espresso and gelato breaks.
The Cinque Terre, Piegza said, ?captures a different time and place.? And much of the draw is its ?real sense of authenticity, when people lived more simply.?
Beth Rubin, manager of custom travel planning for Select Italy, a company specializing in travel to Italy, said tourism to Cinque Terre had ?exploded? in recent years. ?It?s very outdoorsy and offers an active vacation that?s not too expensive. People who are traveling on a budget really like to go there.? Select Italy plans to offer its full range of tours,?and its local suppliers ?are going to find a way,? to work around any potential problems, she said. ?
Other tour companies are reporting similar determination to proceed.
?We would never consider canceling our tours,? said Carolyn Walters Fox, who handles marketing and media relations for Country Walkers, ?as long as it?s safe.?
Country Walkers specializes in active travel and has offered guided walking and hiking tours to the region for about 15 years. Currently, six tours are planned from May through the autumn. The local people ?have been so good to us,? Fox said. ?Tourism is an opportunity to give back.? ?
Melanie Morin, who manages tours to the Cinque Terre region, is not worried if trails the company used in the past are not open in May. ?The alternative routes still make a spectacular tour,? she said, and the local residents ?are really trying to do everything they can to be ready for the season.?
Piegza, of Classic Journeys, recounted how one of its tour groups had been dining at Al Pozzo, a restaurant in Monterosso last October when the rain started. The group was able to leave the area before the storm became dangerous, but the restaurant was severely damaged.
Restaurant owners Jolanda and Gino Barilari, told Piegza by phone earlier this month that Al Pozzo recently reopened, and some American tourists had just finished eating lunch.
?They were able to complete their restaurant almost a month early,? Piegza said, noting that for more than four months the extended Barilari family ?worked from sunrise to sundown, seven days a week, to rebuild. They were so exited. They said ?wow? we made it through.?? (?Rebuild Monterosso? provides updates for businesses and activities.)

Tourists in Italy can learn about history, architecture, art and much more.
?We encourage people to come,? said Michele Sherman, an American expat living in Italy, and executive director of Save Vernazza, a nonprofit created after the disaster to raise funds and awareness to rebuild, restore and preserve the town. Vernazza was the town most impacted by the storm.??A lot has been done, but a lot still needs to be done,? she said.?
The group?s website Travel Advisor page lists updated information about what local businesses and trails are open or scheduled to reopen, and what is off limits. ?We?re in constant contact with all the local business owners and we?re in the loop about the status of trail repairs,? Sherman said. ?We?re always walking around with a camera.?
When UNESCO added the area to?the World Heritage List in 1997, it cited ?the harmonious interaction between people and nature to produce a landscape of exceptional scenic quality.? But through the years?the surrounding?terraced hills were neglected as the local?economy shifted from agriculture to tourism, Sherman said.??The focus in Vernazza changed.??But finding a balance between maintaining the territory and sustainable tourism is?critical to moving forward, she said, ?not only to prevent further disasters, but also to preserve Vernazza?s cultural heritage. It's still beautiful,? Sherman said. It?s not what it once was, ?but it can be that way again.?

Australian Sports Entertainment: Kerry Packer Aussie Legend Live ...
Kerry Packer James Packer Crown Casino Crown Limited Art Television Publicity Media Man
Media Man revisits one of their most popular news stories from 2010...
G'day punters, casino and gambling millionaires and billionaires, media magnates, journalists, historians and art lovers. Art lovers?! Yes, today we bring you a special Kerry Packer special. The legend lives on, not only here, but now at an Australian artists exhibition, and of course 'Our James' (James Packer) continues to fly the flag and do the family legacy proud with his Crown Limited empire. Not only that, we also cover the pending return of KP to Australian television in an ABC mini series tipped to hit the jackpot, and Network Nine is bringing back 'Underbelly', complete with gambling themes. Media Man and Gambling911 present The Kerry Packer Special...
Kerry Packer & Friends...
Kerry Packer & Friends - NG Art Gallery - 7th Dec - 24th Dec 2010
3 Little Queen Street
Chippendale, NSW Sydney AUSTRALIA
Tuesday - Saturday 11.00am - 5.30pm
Ok punters, here's the rundown. The artist - storyteller is Gina Sinozich. She's an 80 year old, Croat, Sydney based artist who paints in order to help recycle memory. Sinozich's latest exhibition, Kerry Packer and Friends, is her first solo commercial effort in Sydney and is tells the story of the legendary Kerry Packer. She covers the unique personality and complexities of a legend who was known for his astronomical wealth, super whale gambling exploits, running his business with an iron fist, and colourful run ins with the Australian government, amongst other things.
Sinozich migrated down under to Australia is 1956 and began to paint at the age of 75, now having work in Australian and New Zealand corporate and public collections. Her show showcases Packer as 'one of us' rather than the untouchable media tycoon. Sinozich was inspired to tell the story on the premise that we often hear bad before good. This tribute to KP is generous and reveals alot of the most powerful men in the world, who in 2004, was estimated to have a net worth of AUD 6.5 billion. The work of Sinozich will be showcased at NG Art Gallery from the 7th-24th of December and is certain to excite audiences, punters, art lovers or both. A fews Aussie commentator think this blows away much of the art that American gambling tycoon Steve Wynn shows off. Maybe Wynn might like to make a purchase of some classic Packer creations.
Sinozich says Packer gave back to society in a meaningful way and the series was intended to stand as a testament for this man's intrinsic goodwill after his death in December 2005. She recites a story that fuelled her initial interest in Packer, "...one lady said that she was on George Street with two little kids behind her and she was running...running to go on the train, and he (Packer) stopped her and said, 'don't you have a car?' and he wrote a cheque for her and said here, 'buy yourself a car'." Sinozich also fondly recalls, "...when he was playing in casino in Perth he won so much money and the girl who was serving wine...he asked her, 'do you have a mortgage on the house?' she said 'yes', then he wrote a cheque for AUD 600,000."
The talented, even cunning, artist worked like a Trojan horse for a fortnight and managed to produce 26 paintings that deeply explore her subject's nature, removing much of the mystic of Packer as an uncompromising media mogul. All the characters in Sinozich's work have a yarn to tell, and most aspects of his life are covered... birth, death, and much of the in between. Make no mistake, the works are smart, and unique, and are tipped to become collectors items.
The work is relatively simple, but full of life, and has been described as "traditional representational painting", which one may argue is a dying art. We think KP would have liked the tribute, and we await word to see what living members of the Packer clan think of the works.
Kerry Packer Legend To Return To Australian TV In Cleo Mini Series...
Packer is to return to life on Aussie TV via new ABC drama Paper Giants: The Birth Of Cleo (not to be confused with the Cleopatra slot game).
Australian readers may recall the public backlash to the introduction of the super sexy womens? title in 1972. There were Cleo lovers and haters, but we're still talking about it today, so it made an impact, which is better than many of today's rags.
Rob Carlton will play a young Packer opposite Asher Keddie as publishing pioneer, the sexy and smart Ita Buttrose.
Rumours of a sexual relationship between Packer and Ita around the time of Cleo magazine's start off, but this won't be a focus on the mini-series, due to air next year.
Buttrose, who first made her mark as the magazine's editor, was a consultant on the production.
"If there was a supposed affair it didn't happen in this timeframe. I have no idea if there was, we didn't raise it with her," Edwards said.
There ABC publicity brief has whet our appetite for lots of Packer classic stuff and enough scandal to keep us coming back for more.
"It's 1972. Skirts are up, pants are down. Girls can have anything: Fabulous careers, fashionable clothes and oral sex," spruiks the promo.
The drama cleverly follows the death of Sir Frank Packer and the rise of his second son, who defies even family expectation to succeed, in a way no one could have expected.
"It was a real turning point in Kerry's career. It was a period when he made his first big move and it was an astonishing success and one against the odds in some respects," Edwards said.
Cleo magazine itself was a fine, yet controversial work, and introduced the nude male centrefold and sexual hits, tips, tricks and more for women. Media Man friend, actor Jack Thompson, is tipped to have his racy centrefold recreated. Something about a 6th finger, down there.
ABC TV by all accounts have taken a calculated risk on the series. Most quarters of society, both insiders and outsiders we've chatted with believe the gamble will pay off with a tidy jackpot, and whispers already circulate as to how many awards the show and actors will pick up.
Nine's David Gyngell Respects Packer History; PBL Becomes Nine Entertainment Co...
KP put Publishing & Broadcasting Media on the map and grew it to become arguably the biggest media brands in Australia.
PBL - the name, is now history, since Bondi Beach based chief executive, David Gyngell, rebranded it with Nine Entertainment Co.
Gyngell, who announced the rebranding at Nine's 2011 program launch in Sydney on Friday, advised the new name would be more recognisable to the public and large and went on to emphasise Nine's broad range of businesses, which sport Nine, ACP Magazines, Ticketek and NineMSN.
The recognition factor is important since the firm is likely to be floated on the Australian Stock Exchange by its private equity owners, CVC Asia Pacific, in the first half of next year.
It's understood that a strong level of support from a host of retail investors will be key to the $5 billion-plus float's chances of a jackpot.
Gyngell wisely acknowledged it was not an easy decision given he is the late Kerry Packer's godson and great mate of James Packer. History buffs, just in case you wondered, PBL was formed way back in 1994 when KP merged Nine with ACP (Australian Consolidated Press).
"PBL has a long association with the Packers so personally I don't take that lightly. But it's modernising a business that needs to be publicly known. We don't have the luxury of having James Packer or another mogul giving the company real gravitas."
Other media updates down under include Network Seven being backed by Kerry Stokes and Network Ten's board now has James Packer, News Corporation director Lachlan Murdoch, mining magnate Gina Rinehart and WIN TV owner Bruce Gordon.
"Nine is the biggest thing that we have and it is also the thing that supports all the other companies in the best possible way," Gyngell said. "It will be a new year. We are starting again.
Nine confirmed its crime drama Underbelly would come back with a series set in the roaring 20s in Sydney as well as 3 Underbelly movies! And, get this, a good spot of gambling will also be featured.
